"One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don’t clean it up too quickly."

A Message from our 2021 President
|
|
Another year is coming to a close with the Holiday season upon us. Even though we have seen many things change in our lives and communities, there is one thing that still stands strong and true, and that my friends, is Christmas.
All of us have many different ways in which we celebrate this holiday, both religious and non-religious, but most importantly we celebrate with family and dear friends. As we prepare, in all the bustle of getting ready for Christmas, let me encourage you that even if we have to change how we gather, the love that we feel and convey does not have to change. Let us not forget the love that was shone to us through the birth of a baby in a manger many years ago. No matter who you are or what you believe, this love is for everybody.
My prayer and wish is that all of you will feel that love and pause for a moment to share that love with others as we end this year and welcome a new year. Chris & I want to wish all of you a Blessed Merry Christmas and a New Year.
Sincerely,
President Dan VerHeul & First Lady Chris

2020 Royal Candidates

December is an exciting time for Royalty. We anxiously await to learn who our new Royalty Candidates are. In early November, our Royalty VP, Kim Johnson, along with President Dan and members of our 2020 Royal Court hosted virtual Q&A Zoom calls with potential Candidates. It was great to meet all the new faces and catch up with the Princesses to hear how their first couple of months in college are going and what meant the most to them this past year with Lilac.
All participating Spokane County High Schools have till Friday, December 18th to have their Candidate submit their required forms. Once all Candidates are official, the real fun begins! We will get the opportunity to meet the Candidates and Parents at an orientation in early January. Then the Candidates will hit the ground running with our typical training sessions guiding our Candidates in enhancing their leadership, professional and community service knowledge and skills. Of course, they will also learn all things Lilac and the opportunities being part of the Royalty Program can bring.
While we are looking forward to meeting our new Royalty Candidates, we have also been enjoying watching our 2020 Royal Court stay busy with school and keeping their commitment to their community. Although most of our Princesses are away from home, they are still giving any spare time they might have volunteering and giving back to their current cities. In mid-November, Princesses Klaire and Madeline headed to Northtown Mall to take part in The Salvation Army's annual 'Clothe a Child' event. This is a wonderful event where local children have the opportunity to come and pick out much needed new clothes. Our Princesses loved getting to know the kiddos who stopped by and helped them shop for new outfits. Although this has been a unusual year for our Court, it is events like these that make their time with Lilac that much more rewarding and treasured.
In next month's newsletter, we will introduce you to our 2021 Royal Candidates! We can not wait for you to meet the amazing young leaders we are so fortunate to have in our Lilac City!

Who Do You Love???
US!
We are very excited to share that the Spokane Lilac Festival is the STCU & KREM 2 'Who Do You Love' recipient for November! Spokane residents were asked to submit their votes in early November for their favorite military supporting non-profit. And Spokane chose us! STCU & KREM 2 will be presenting the Lilac Festival with a $2,500 check and we are so thrilled!
We can not thank our community and Lilac members enough for going online and voting for us every day. We are beyond grateful and are so honored to receive this recognition from KREM 2 & STCU. We will always continue to Honor Our Military as much as possible as they give so much for us!

The fall is typically a less hectic time for the Lilac Festival, and our office team has been taking full advantage with a "fall cleaning" of the office. We want to thank everyone who donated supplies and funds to help get us re-organized. Going through over 80 years of memorabilia was such a joy, and there was a lot of it!
Our re-organization mission is almost complete, but we are hoping for just a smidge more help from you. Below are some historical items we are on the look out for. If you have or know of someone who has these items lying around and willing to donate, let us know.
- Parade Programs - '68, '69, '76, '03, '04, '05
- Coronation Programs - '62 & Before, '73, '76, '02, '03, '04, '05, '10
- Marching Band Competition Program - 2000 (8th Annual)
Also, we have several copies of other years not list above if you are needing to fill your collection. If you're looking for a past Parade or Coronation program(s), send the office an email and we'll let you know if we have it and arrange a way to get it to you. For those programs unclaimed, we plan to donate to an antique/consignment shop in the new year. Let us know by mid-January if you would like anything.

Our office is now open normal business hours, 10a-2p Monday thru Friday. We continue to ask that if you are stopping by the office, you continue to wear your mask and if possible, give us a heads up you are coming.
We will be closing the office for the Holiday season from December 21st through January 1st. Our office will re-open Monday, January 4th at 10am.
We hope you all have an amazing Christmas and New Year with your loved ones. Please stay healthy and safe and we'll see you in 2021!
