New Ways of Viewing and New Views of Seizures

Sydney Cash, M.D., Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School

Attending epileptologist, Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Sydney Cash, MD, PhD is Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and attending epileptologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Cash received his BS in Biology from Yale College before going on to pursue an MD and PhD at Columbia University. Following internship and residency in Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was selected chief resident in his final year, Dr. Cash completed a fellowship in epilepsy and neurophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cash's research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying both normal and pathological cortical activity and developing novel neuroprosthetic approaches for treating a wide variety of neurological problems. This work, funded by NIH, DOD, NSF and foundation grants, has melded issues spanning basic neuroscientific questions of the physiology that underlie normal oscillatory activity, sleep and cognition, to issues surrounding how the brain transitions from one state to another including from normal activity to seizure activity and how seizures can be localized and treated. Groundbreaking work in this domain has explored the role of single neurons, small neuronal populations and the circuits involved in seizure initiation and propagation. Most of these investigations have centered around large, complex data sets derived from physiological recordings of human brain activity. As part of this work, he has been involved in the DARPA SUBNETS and NESD projects and the New England Pediatric Device Consortium. Dr. Cash has also been an integral part of the BrainGate trial clinical and scientific team. He co-founded the Clinical Data Animation Center (CDAC) which aims to bring big data and AI solutions to a wide range of medical problems and, with Dr. Leigh Hochberg, cofounded the Mass General Center for Neurotechnology and Neurorestoration (CNTR) which is focused on bringing novel neurotechnology into clinical use.
