St. Sarkis Church Needs Your Help

Dear Parishioners,

On Sunday, November 29, 2020, St. Sarkis Church had a special general membership meeting. Some church members attended in person and some connected via Zoom. The Pastor and the Board of Trustees had some very important and urgent news to update everyone on.

This past summer there was a severe rain and wind storm that caused damage to our roof. This caused water to get into our church in many locations. The Board started the process of filing an insurance claim and consulting with many roof contractors on the best way to repair the damage. Some of you may have noticed that scaffolding has gone up and the work has begun. Financially we were set to handle this undertaking.

While the contractor was working on the roof renovation, the team noticed a problem around the school part of our building. The brick wall is leaning away from the interior cinder block. This is not only a major structural issue but it is a big safety issue as well. With winter approaching, the bad weather will only speed up its deterioration. The contractor gave us a quote for the additional work needed to fix the problem. Fixing it means stabilizing the building and creating a sound structure. The overall coast of the projects is $70,000. The Board has re-appropriated $20,000 from the Church savings but we still need $50,000 in emergency repair funds.

During the meeting, the Board asked for the approval of spending the above mentioned $70,000 to repair the brickwork. A member proposed a motion to approve this. The motion was seconded and the decision was made to go forward with this repair work.
The Board will now focus on fundraising.

We know that 2020 has been a very difficult year and these past few months have been heartbreaking for all Armenians. We know that you have already donated to so many worthwhile causes and we are aware that fundraising right now will be a difficult endeavor. St. Sarkis Church is our spiritual home and our community's home. We need to fix our home and we appeal to you to support this important project.

Thank you for your helping us maintaining the structural integrity of our church building.

Prayerfully,
Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor and
The Board of Trustees of St. Sarkis Church

AYF March
Reported by Miss Mimi Bijimenian
Saturday, November 28th, the AYF New York "Hyortiks" led a march for the recognition of the independence of Artsakh and demanded justice for the war crimes committed by Turkey and Azerbaijan against indigenous Armenians. Our Hyortiks also dropped off a letter at the office of NY Congressman Tom Suozzi to thank him for supporting our cause.

We thank everyone who came to support and participate in the march. Our presence was proof that although the war is over, our job as Armenians is not done.  We are reminded that even though we are far from the conflict we still have to protect our church, culture, and traditions.

The memory of our soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our homeland lives on in our hearts and encourages us to continue their fight here in the diaspora.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-12)
 Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (13:1-9)
Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God."
Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.' "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.' "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.' "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.' " 'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.' "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.' "

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
FEAST OF THE CONCEPTION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY
Wednesday, December 9, is the Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. This is one of the eight feast days devoted to the Holy Virgin in the Armenian Church's liturgical calendar. This feast is always celebrated on December 9, and is part of the Church's preparation for Christmas. The faithful rejoice in the event that celebrates Mary's conception in fulfillment of the prayers of her parents and who was nurtured to become the mother of the Messiah. Bible readings for this Feast are: Song of Songs 6:3-8; Malachi 3:1-2; Galatians 3:24-29; Luke 1:39-56.

EVE OF THE FAST OF ST. JAMES
This Sunday (December 6) is the eve (paregentan) of the Fast of St. James (Hagop) of Nisibus. This five-day fast, Monday to Friday, leads us to the Feast of St. James, which is next Saturday. Traditionally the entire fifty-day period of Advent was a period of fasting, similar to Great Lent. In modern times, three week-long (Monday to Friday) fasts are observed during Advent: Fast of Advent (Hisnagats Bahk), Fast of St. James (Sourp Hagopee Bahk), and the Fast of the Nativity (Dznuntyan Bahk).

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
This Sunday (December 6) is the third Sunday of Advent, a season of anticipation for the coming of Christ that gives us purpose to live in hope regardless of the many challenges and vicissitudes that face us. John the Baptist is the greatest Advent figure (read Matthew, Chapter 3 and Luke, Chapter 3). In the Armenian Church tradition this period of waiting is known as Hisnag -the fifty day period that leads to the celebration of Christ's Nativity and Epiphany on January 6.

ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA, THE WONDERWORKER
This Saturday (December 5) the Armenian Church remembers St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, a fourth century Bishop of Myra, Lycia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was a defender of orthodoxy and because of many miracles attributed to his intercession he is called "the Wonderworker." He was a secret and generous giver of gifts and some believe him to be the model for Santa Claus.

WE COMMEMORATE THIS WEEK
Saturday, December 5: St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
Sunday, December 6: Third Sunday of Advent
Sunday, December 6: Eve (paregentan) of the Fast of St. James
Tuesday, December 8:  St. Cornelius the Centurion and St. Polycarp of Smyrna.
Wednesday, December 9: Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary.

LIGHT A VIRTUAL CANDLE

During these uncertain times, we welcome you to the practice of lighting a virtual candle.

Lighting a candle is a way of extending one's prayer and showing solidarity with the person on whose behalf the prayer is offered.

"When Jesus spoke to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

This Sunday Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian personally will light a candle for every donation received.
