Hurricane Season Preparedness
In the case of an incoming hurricane, there are steps you can take to prepare your congregation, both the members and  your physical space. These suggestions are not an exhaustive list, but a good start.

Make an Inventory List
Forms like this set of Church Inventory Forms offer a way to get down serial numbers for your more expensive office equipment and other key data that will assist if the church suffers damage. Once forms are completed, make a few hard copies to share among leaders. The best practice is also to scan the forms and place as a Google Doc, in DropBox, or another online storage site so they can be accessible from any computer once the storm has passed. In addition to these paper forms, record a smart phone video of church offices, narrating the equipment, and get photos of the church organ or other high cost items and place these at an online storage site. These will be of invaluable assistance in making an insurance claim.

Identify Potentially Vulnerable Parishioners
Identify senior citizens, disabled persons, single parents, and those living alone. Add any families living in trailers, or in low lying areas prone to flooding. Have a plan for who will contact these persons in order to ensure that they are in safe areas. To the degree we can, the Diocese will assist in identifying locations in safe areas with churches and homes open to those who need assistance. Make sure everyone you assist in leaving their homes has needed medicines.

Update AlertMedia Contacts
The Diocese will once again use the  AlertMedia  system to remain in touch with parish leaders. Clergy, Senior Wardens, and Junior Wardens should always keep the Diocese up to date on email and phone numbers, sending them to Canon Loren Lasch ([email protected]) and copying Ms. Maggie Lyons ([email protected]).

The above are a few minimal steps you can take now. If a storm path looks like it could impact your congregation and you don't have a plan, we have an 11th Hour Checklist.

Creating a Better Plan
We do have time and every congregation needs a Disaster Preparedness Plan. To help in this process, we recommend this guide from Episcopal Relief and Development: Comprehensive Disaster Preparedness Planning Guide.

The Rev. Ted Atwood (1936-2021)
Theodore Oertel Atwood, Jr. was born August 3, 1936, in Augusta, Georgia to Theodore and Francis Atwood. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 25, 1964, at Christ Church in Savannah, by The Right Reverend Albert R. Stuart, the sixth Bishop of Georgia.

Atwood served multiple congregations in the Diocese of Georgia, including as Curate at Christ Church Frederica on St. Simons Island, Rector at St. John's in Bainbridge, Rector at Christ Church in Augusta, and Interim Rector at St. Michael's in Waynesboro before returning to active military duty to serve with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam.

His post-Navy assignments were in the Dioceses of San Diego and Georgia. His most recent service was as Vicar of Holy Cross, Carlsbad, from November 2006 - July 2010. Until a time of declining health in 2019, Fr. Atwood was a great supporter of military men and women at Camp Pendleton and throughout San Diego.

Atwood continued to serve as a dedicated priest in retirement in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, regularly attending clergy conferences, diocesan functions, and supporting numerous diocesan organizations. He had a special relationship with Holy Cross in Carlsbad, St. Dunstan's in San Diego, Christ Church in Coronado, and was a friend to many throughout the diocese. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He so enjoyed traveling to visit his daughters and their families. He took joy in encouraging his grandchildren in their many endeavors.

As a devoted Episcopal priest, who did much to build up the Church and encourage God's people, we wish him "fair winds and following seas." May he hear the voice of His Lord and Savior, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the joy of Thy Lord" (Matthew 25:23). Atwood is survived by his sister Anne Petrey, daughters Catherin Atwood Voels, Margaret Atwood Gerard, and grandchildren.

You may reach out to his family with condolences at: Family of the Rev. Theodore Atwood, 6785 El Banquero Place,
San Diego, Ca. 92119

She was educated in Chatham County and graduated from Savannah High School. She attended business college and was an accomplished secretary. She was employed by the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia and later the Chatham County Board of Elections. She enjoyed Big Band music, dancing, oil painting, crossword puzzles and crafting. Evelyn was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Henry Hunt, Sr., and two daughters, Nancy Susan Hunt and Sally Louise Leonard.
