Each year more than
5 million pounds
of plastic enter the ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico has some of the highest concentrations of microplastics in the world?! Birds, seals, turtles, fish and other wildlife in the gulf and basin ingest microplastics,which can be deadly.
As litter accumulates, it also prevents neighborhoods from draining properly, threatening homes, businesses and roadways with flooding.
And you can help!
Beach Sweep
is the biggest community cleanup in Southeastern Louisiana and provides the community with an opportunity to end trash flow at the source by picking up litter that travels down storm drains and eventually into the lake. Last year we picked up trash from our streets, catch basins, and waterways around the basin.
And while things are different this year, we're not giving up.
We want our volunteers to Stay Safe! Please - wear a mask & gloves, practice social distancing, and work in small groups of family and friends. You can make a difference by going out in your neighborhood and picking up trash and debris!
