GRANT SPOTLIGHT

U.S. Farmers & Ranchers in Action

Through partnership, U.S. Farmers & Ranchers in Action (USFRA) has been able to deliver on the organization's mission to connect farmers and ranchers with food and agricultural leaders across the value chain, elevating the U.S. farmer and rancher perspective into key sustainability - and climate-related conversations where the producer's voice has traditionally been missing. Through USFRA's signature leadership convening, the Honor the Harvest Forum held in September 2021, as well as USFRA producer organization participation in key dialogues in coordination with the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit & Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), among other events - MGPUB's partnership has supported the effort to highlight the critical needs and fundamental role that US producers play in sustainably feeding a growing global population and addressing the challenges of a changing climate.

Additionally, membership in USFRA grants the MGPUB a presence on its board of directors. Currently, Chip Bowling is serving as Maryland's delegate and has the opportunity to shape how and where USFRA sets their priorities.

Maryland Grain Producers Check-Off Program
The Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board is funded through the Maryland Grain Check-Off Program; when grain that is produced in Maryland is sold by a farmer, the Utilization Board receives one-half of a percent of its net value. The Check-Off program is voted on by referendum every five years and has always received a greater than 90% affirmation vote. Each year organizations and universities are encouraged to submit grant proposals in November for consideration by MGPUB. The Utilization Board gathers to hear presentations on each proposal and reports from the previously funded projects. Projects must improve the viability and profitability of grain production through research, education, or market development.

For 2022, the Grain Producers will award $978,650 for 37 projects across the state. Congratulations to each recipient.
