Foundations offer free community college course for all NH high school grads
As New Hampshire’s high school Class of 2021 prepares for graduation, two philanthropic foundations are offering every member of that class an early graduation gift: a free community college course at any of New Hampshire’s seven community colleges in the fall.

Employers and the state’s community colleges came together recently to host the first annual statewide welding competition, with employers donating funds to be awarded to the top high school finishers for scholarships to college welding programs. “This is about our future workforce,” said Hollie Noveletsky of Novel Iron Works in Greenland, creator of the competition.

When Marcello Hart first heard about a new apprenticeship program at Smiths Medical in Keene, where he has worked for the past eight-and-a-half years, he thought it sounded like a good opportunity to advance in his career.

“The main purpose was just to better myself and help better the company,” said Hart, a 32-year-old Keene native. “And in doing so, getting that higher level of education was the next step in what I needed to progress.”

You may have heard recently that the Community College System of New Hampshire will offer a free class this fall to 2021 New Hampshire high school graduates at any of the state’s seven community colleges. It is a celebration of sorts; it’s a gift to a group of students who’ve had a particularly tough senior year, and it’s a reflection of the very positive reality that our system has come through the pandemic and is moving forward with momentum.
