The Mayor and City Council met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 25.
The Council also approved a $31,000 agreement for monument sign designs which will end up being placed at the intersection of 100th Street and 54th Avenue, at the NW Urbandale Drive Interstate interchange, and at the north edge of town on 128th Street. This ongoing project will help identify Urbandale for visitors and residents, convey a welcoming entrance to Urbandale, promote community identity, and support economic development initiatives.

Urbandale Mayor Bob Andeweg takes a quick moment to share some great things happening in the community. Urbandale's population continues to grow, new construction set records this past year, and as soon as it’s warm enough we'll be enhancing Urbandale with some exciting new projects and amenities.

This year, new councilmembers Amy Croll and Larry McBurney join the City Council in helping to lead Urbandale into the future. Councilmembers Croll and McBurney were sworn in for new four-year terms at a meeting last month, while Mayor Andeweg was sworn in for his fifth term.

Record Breaking Year for Urbandale Building Permits
|
|
The Community Development Department issued a total of 1,388 residential and commercial building permits in 2021, with a total valuation of more than $220.6 million. This is the highest valuation on record, surpassing the previous record from 2003 of $188 million. Urbandale saw the construction of 417 single-family homes and 25 new commercial buildings in 2021 which helped set the new record for permit valuation.

Fire Department Launches New SMS Alerts Program

To help keep you informed and improve emergency preparedness, the Fire Department has partnered with Dallas County Emergency Management Agency to send you text messages in emergency situations. These messages are “emergency” messages only (tornados, severe thunderstorm, high wind, flash flooding, extreme cold, and more). To receive these alerts, text “UFDAlerts” to 67283. That’s it. Any warnings or emergencies will be delivered right to your phone. Be sure to follow the Fire Department on Twitter @UFDPIO and the City @CityofUrbandale for non-emergency information.

Affordable Connectivity Program

The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC program that helps ensure households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more. Eligible households are encouraged to apply to receive up to $30 per month discount toward internet service. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Learn more about the FCC program here.

Scholarship Applications Due February 15

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IMAU) is offering a scholarship program for students pursuing a post-secondary program with a utility focus. The City of Urbandale is an IMAU member, making high school graduates that live in Urbandale eligible for consideration. Find out more about the $1,000 scholarships here.

The Portable Ice Rink is now open and located just south of the Urbandale Public Library (open from Dawn – Noon for hockey players and from Noon – Dusk for all other skaters). If the Red Flag is up, the rink is unsafe to use and is closed. If the Green Flag is up, the rink is suitable for skating!
