Virtual Programming @ SPL
The Somerville Public Library may be closed, but there are still lots of virtual programs going on for kids and adults such as ESL Conversation Groups, Story Times, Cooking Demonstrations, and Book Groups.

Check out the full list of Virtual Programs on the SPL website.  Also, be sure to subscribe to our new SPL YouTube channel to watch recordings of your favorite programs.
Citizenship Classes & Virtual Tutoring
In September 2019, the Somerville Public Library held its first citizenship classes at Central Library.  About 12 students attended and so far, 4 students have passed the citizenship interview.

Walter (pictured here) is originally from El Salvador and is the first SPL citizenship student to pass the interview and take the oath.  Walter says he wanted to become a US citizen in order to vote.

Although our Spring 2020 classes are cancelled, we can still help you prepare for the citizenship interview.  Free Virtual 1-1 Citizenship Tutoring is available.  Contact Brigid, bpigott@minlib.net to be matched with a citizenship tutor.

Meet George
 Circulation Librarian at Central Library
You may not recognize him with the sunglasses on, but if you have ever checked out books at Central Library or attended ESL on Tuesday nights, you most likely have seen George at the Circulation Desk.  George works in one of the busiest departments in the library and makes sure everything runs smoothly and patrons are happy.

We asked George some questions to help you get to know him better.

How long have you worked at the Somerville Public Library?
I've been working here for about 50 years (yes, 50 years!) mainly at the Circulation desk.

What's your first memory of the Somerville Public Library?
My first memory was when me and a couple of friends were asked to leave the premises for being too loud.  This is when I was much younger and didn't know better.  I've changed since then, it was a long time ago before I worked here.

What is your favorite memory from Somerville Public Library?
There have been many great memories over the years.  Meeting my wife Diana is the best thing that ever happened to me.

What do you wish people knew about the Somerville Public Library?
What a fun place it is to work, and I don't think a lot of people know about all the activities and services we offer.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I'm a big Boston sports fan especially the Bruins.  I used to ride a motorcycle, love fast cars and was actually involved in racing years ago with some friends.

If you weren't working at the library, what would you be doing instead?
Years ago I applied to be a bus driver, but it never happened.  I liked it here too much I guess.  I also passed on working for the post office.

What do you do when you aren't working?
I have lots to do around my house taking care of gardens and landscaping.  It keeps me busy, especially this time of year.  I love being with family and going out for dinner with friends.

If you visit Central Library, be sure to say hi to George!  He can also help you sign up for a library card and answer any questions you have about the library.

A fantastic collection of short stories, some magical, most dark, always interesting  about the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

Recommended by Melinda, Generalist Librarian
Beautiful new novel by a Dominican-American about immigrants, widowhood, and doing the right thing during difficult times. It is especially relevant in today's political climate.

Food blogger, Gina Homolka serves up a great selection of familiar dishes that have been lightened up, but are still quick, easy, and flavorful.
