Sukkot Shabbat

Friday October 14, 2022

One of the most wonderful customs of Sukkot is to fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim - Welcoming Guests into the sukkah!

Temple B'nai Chaim invites you to join us in our sukkah, this Friday, 10/14/22! We will begin at 5:45 pm in the courtyard for a pre-Shabbat "Pizza in the Hut" dinner, followed by a musical Shabbat service at 6:30 pm featuring TBC's Kindergarten & First Grade teacher, Ariella Mendes on piano and Morah Ellie on guitar and the voices of our own Cantor Harriet Dunkerley and the TBC Religious School students! The service will be followed by a Potluck Oneg around 7:30 pm. To attend, please click here!

Sign up for Wi-ACT’s Meal-Packaging Event

Saturday, October 22!

Wi-ACT’s Rise Against Hunger meal-packaging event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22nd at the WEPCO Church Complex, 36 New Canaan Road, Wilton. TBC’s on-line registration site for this event is https://signup.com/go/uKfAEQw

The meal-packaging work is in 90-minute shifts; so just go on the site and choose your shift, beginning at 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm. Children as young as 7 can participate, and intergenerational family groups are welcome and very much encouraged.

We all know how joyous and uplifting the experience is as we package meals to serve hundreds of children in some of the most food-deprived circumstances in the world. Last year our meals went to Haiti. This year, we hope to package 50% more meals than last year, and if we do, we can feed 300 children for an entire year. (See also Rise Against Hunger's Stories of Impact.) Hope to see you there!

PhoneBank and TextBank with the RAC

From the Religious Action Center: The 2022 midterms are less than one month away. Since we kicked off our campaign in May, you and over 2,200 other members of the Reform Movement have worked together to contact over 208,000 voters!

We have made great strides to protect and expand access to democracy this year, and we are counting on you to step up over the coming weeks to get out the vote.

One of the most efficient ways to reach voters is through a virtual phonebank or textbank. Some of our partners have shared data showing that one phone conversation made it 47 percent more likely that the person would vote. Even leaving a voicemail improved turnout by 16 percent! Using text messaging platforms, we can reach tens of thousands of voters in just one evening. Please sign up for these upcoming phone and text banks:

  • Wednesday, October 19 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm ET: Textbank with Reclaim Our Vote (register here).
  • Thursday, October 20, from 05:45pm - 8:30pm ET: Phonebank for Abortion Rights in Michigan with EVEV and WRJ (register here).

You can find even more action opportunities at www.rac.org/evev.

Are you already thinking ahead about how you can protect democracy during early voting and on election day? Sign up here to volunteer with the Election Protection Coalition (in-person and virtual opportunities available) and sign up here to be a poll worker in your community.

Please contact campaign@rac.org with any questions.

P.S. If you are working on postcards, here’s a reminder of when you should put them in the mail:

  • Please mail Arizona postcards between October 5 and 25.
  • Please mail Georgia postcards between October 10 and 20.
  • Please mail Texas postcards between October 17 and 25.
  • Please mail Florida postcards between October 17 and 25: we and Reclaim Our Vote are recommending you send postcards closer to October 25 to give as much time as possible for infrastructure recovery and rebuilding efforts in areas affected by Hurricane Ian.

UPDATE ON: TBC's Action Agenda for 2022-2023

TBC's: A Year of Healing and Repair - A Time for Action!

All the votes and expressions of interest are now in for TBC's "Year of Healing and Repair - A Time for Action" initiative. Once tallied, the top 3 areas that emerge will become our Social Action Impact Target Areas for this year. Next steps: TBC's social action committee and planning group will be reaching out to form three small working groups that will develop the action agendas for this year. Initial agenda items can include:

  • educating ourselves, to develop a common understanding of the selected task area and possible scope of action
  • inviting others from local synagogues, Jewish organizations, or domain experts, to participate/contribute

After that, action plans, concrete schedules and broader congregational outreach can follow.

If you have questions or wish to help shape our social action agenda, please send email to mailto:tbc-time-for-action@googlegroups.com

Baxter Barenberg's Bar Mitzvah Project!

"I am going to be doing my mitzvah project with an organization called DIG USA. DIG stands for Determination, Integrity, Growth. It’s an organization that I've been involved with since I was 7 years old - that is almost half my life! It started with one coach/ owner named Dan, who has created this organization to help the underserved communities in CT learn to play both chess and soccer, creating both sports and educational opportunities. After one of my first chess lessons my Mom told me I had just helped give a free lesson to a less fortunate kid in a town like Bridgeport. DIG works on the lesson for lesson model, providing free lessons for every paid lesson, creating opportunities for all.

For my mitzvah project, I'm going to be raising money and gear for the Bridgeport United Girls Team, which is run by DIG. It is a free program open to the girls of Bridgeport. They need new uniforms and all gear. Contributions will accepted through 10/22/22, the date of my bar mitzvah."

Ten Minutes of Torah!

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) provides rich resources for Torah study from a Reform perspective. Their Torah Study website includes "The Torah Explained," "Torah Portion Calendar" and an overview of each week's Torah portion.

In addition, several days a week, the URJ publishes Ten Minutes of Torah. Join the thousands of others who open their email to study a commentary on the week's Torah portion, read about a significant moment in Jewish history, connect with life in Israel, or learn about an upcoming holiday. In just ten minutes, you can add to your Jewish knowledge.
