History Program for King's Chapel Pride Week - "Let Me Be All Yours": The Romantic Friendship of Charles Sumner & Samuel Gridley Howe
Thursday, June 10 at 5:30 PM
LGBTQ+ people have always existed, though the descriptors and understandings of their identities have changed over the course of many centuries. In the 19th century, same-gender affection often took the form of romantic friendships. These ambiguous relationships allowed friends to form deep physical and emotional bonds with one another, while also allowing lovers a degree of openness in a time in which homosexuality was criminalized.

Join the King's Chapel History Program on June 10th at 5:30 to learn about the complex and tumultuous romantic friendship between two members of King's Chapel: Senator Charles Sumner and Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe.

This event is co-hosted by Longfellow House - Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site and presented by Park Ranger Meaghan Michel.

From the Minister

The composer of our opening hymn on Sunday, Folliott S. Pierpoint, is said to have written "For the Beauty of the Earth" on a late spring day when flowers were in full bloom and all the earth seemed to rejoice.  I understand completely, writing to you now in early June. May we also sing, with him: "God of all to you we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise."

With love, Joy

Final Confronting Racial Injustice Series Program: The Charles Stuart Story: White Lies and Black Lives
Wednesday, June 9th from 6:00-7:00 PM
Charles Stuart, a white man, murdered his wife and unborn child in Boston in 1989 and falsely blamed the attack on a nonexistent Black man. Believing Stuart's lie, the police engaged in a massive manhunt that terrorized a Black community in Mission Hill with detention, public strip-searches, and the arrest of two innocent men. As some lawmakers demanded the death penalty, the media perpetuated this false story. The Stuart case exemplifies how the narrative of white supremacy continues to lead to the dehumanization and devaluation of Black lives. Widespread acceptance of white lies over Black lives persists today.

King's Chapel is proud to be one of the co-sponsors of the Confronting Racial Injustice Series. We hope you'll join the final program next Thursdays!

From the Bench

Our anthem for this penultimate Sunday of the Virtual Choir Season is Edom by Elisha West, led by Alison LaRosa. Born in Maine, West settled in Woodstock, VT, and fathered 7 children, all of them singers. This concept was later shamelessly stolen by one Captain von Trapp, whose children, adding insult to injury, also eventually settled in VT and completely usurped the West territory a good 150 years later. West set a rousing text by Isaac Watts, aka the "Godfather of English Hymnody", familiar from many of our favorite hymns.

The organ voluntaries are by prolific 20th century British composer Christopher Steel, Intrada and Dance from Six Pieces for Organ.

Summer Barbecues in the Garden are Back! First one on June 22 at 6:00 PM

As in years past, Joy and Bob Fallon invite you to join them for BBQs in the Garden.  How wonderful it will be to see each other safely again, in person! They will provide the main course (hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers); all else (salad, beverage, dessert) is potluck.  If you are more comfortable eating food you have prepared yourself, please bring whatever you want. To still maintain distances, we will sit only four per table. If you are not fully vaccinated, we ask you to wear a mask when not eating.

RSVP to Laura to let us know you are coming, what you will bring, and if you can help with set up or clean up.

Save the dates for the other BBQs: July 22 and August 19!
Peace Walk Donations for Father's Day

This Father's Day, June 20th, we are proud to support our community action partner the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in their many activities to help fathers who have lost children to violence. Thanks to many generous donations from the King's Chapel community, we've raised $7,468 towards our goal of raising $10,000 by Father's Day.

Through their many programs, the Peace Institute walks with fathers and other loved ones affected by violence to support them in healing, and to empower them to work for change.  Please consider donating through our King's Chapel Team as a gift for, or in memory of, your father.  Every donation of every size helps as we walk together towards a more peaceful community.
Volunteers Invited to Join in Next Bell Ringing

The Environmental Action Initiative will once again be ringing the Revere and Son Bell for Climate Action  this month, on Friday the 11th at 11 AM, for 11 minutes, to call attention to the 11th hour of the climate emergency.

All are welcome to join in ringing or witnessing. Bring signs! Gather at 10:50.  Bell-ringing will commence at 11:00.

Contact Kent if you'd like to join.
Small Steps to Greener Living
From the King's Chapel Environmental Action Initiative

You know that bottles for water are bad for the planet. You may, however, not know that some bottled water brands are bad for your health. Some contain traces of arsenic and other toxic substances. Water supplied by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority to Boston and nearby locales from the reservoirs west of the city consistently ranks as some of the safest and tastiest in the nation. Go for it in your reusable bottle.
We're Hiring!

After many years as our beloved Sexton, Clark Aitkins will be stepping down soon. We are in need of a new Sexton to fulfill the custodial and light maintenance duties of King's Chapel and the Parish House properties.

You can read the job description here. If you or someone you know would be a good candidate for this position, please reach out to Gretchen. Thanks!
