In the 1st quarter of 2020, Saginaw Future Inc. (SFI) assisted six projects resulting in nearly $23 million in new investment that is expected to create and retain 210 jobs. In addition, 21 regional companies won 142 government contracts valued at nearly $36 million.
DuPont Healthcare Industries Materials Site is undertaking an expansion of its Elastomer manufacturing process. The Thomas Township facility is dedicated to supplying products to the healthcare industry. The company’s products are used world-wide in applications such as, pharmaceutical tubing, pacemaker leads, drug delivery patches and lubricating coatings. The multi-million dollar project includes $4.8 million in new construction. Several new jobs will be created and 190 retained as a result of the project. SFI assisted the company and the community with a tax incentive.
Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Downtown Saginaw Center is scheduled to open in the Saginaw Riverfront District this fall and SVSU leaders are excited to increase engagement with the Saginaw community. After signing a lease at 200 S. Washington Ave., neighboring Dawn of a New Day coffee house - SVSU plans to utilize the facility as an off-campus base of operations for community engagement-focused programs. There, those programs will commit a wealth of SVSU resources and talent aimed at enriching community partnerships and supporting Saginaw organizations. Those involved with SVSU’s social work programs - including graduate students - as well as other service learning-based, and professional development programs will be among the primary occupants. The facility also will be utilized by SVSU’s Center for Community Engagement, the Michigan Small Business Development Center, the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture Saginaw Community Outpost, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, to name a few. Additionally, the site will include admissions and recruitment programs designed for high school students in the city.  
Lake State Railway is making a major investment in its Huron Subdivision. The $16 million project will re-lay rail and replace old switches along the Mackinaw sub-line that runs from Linwood north to Gaylord.  Lake State will also make upgrades to its locomotive workshop and headquarters located at 750 N. Washington Ave. in the City of Saginaw. The Company received a $7,875,770 federal grant, through the U.S. Department of Transportation to assist in the project. The railway operates hundreds of miles of track stretching from Saginaw to Gaylord and Alpena and down to Plymouth. These lines also run through Bay City, Midland, and Flint. The company services a number of industries throughout the region including timber, agricultural and general commercial businesses.  
Sargent Docks & Terminal, Inc. , l ocated at 5606 N Westervelt Rd. in the City of Zilwaukee, recently completed a $300,000 office expansion. Sargent Docks is also working on a $780,000 expansion of its rail yard. The company is seeking a $375,000 Michigan Department of Transportation grant to assist with the project. The rail yard expansion allows the company greater capacity, which result in better cost savings for customers.
Youth Development Corporation is a new Saginaw nonprofit which teaches skilled trades to at-risk youth. Youth Development received one of 67 U.S. Department of Labor grants in support of “YouthBuild” program and the grant is just under $1.5 million. The organization aims to help Saginaw residents 16-24 years of age who have dropped out of high school by helping them finish their GED and guiding them into skilled trade programs. Projected employment over the next two years could be up to 90 new hires in the community. The 7,080 sq. ft. training facility is located at 126 Weadock Ave. in Downtown Saginaw and will offer training in up to 20 trades. SFI assisted with the grant application process.
Saginaw Future Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) assisted 21 regional companies attain 142 government contracts in the first quarter worth nearly $36 million. Impacted industries include defense contracting, emergency transportation and advanced manufacturing. The SFI PTAC provides free assistance to companies interested in federal, state and local government contracts.

Prem Yoga and Wellness Studio will be opening on Michigan Ave. in Old Town Saginaw. The retrofitting of the exisiting building resulted in an investment of $25,000. The business offers different types of yoga classes, such as aerial, beginner, advanced, chair, restorative, and a variety of yoga therapy workshops.

The owner plans to hire three additional staff as the number of students requires it, as well as invite specialized instructors to teach specially designed classes.

The business has placed a focus on the community by bringing in art, offering a community gather space, providing limited free courses for those who are unable to pay, and creating a satetite location for the African American Festival.
