Career Path - The Future of the Workplace
Do you remember who you wanted to be? I wanted to be a Flight Attendant, after checking into the requirements, I found that you could not be taller than 5’11 and I am 6’1. After that, I always made it a point to check into the requirements of a position early on to determine not only eligibility but also what preparations were necessary.

A career path is a smaller group of jobs within a career cluster that use similar skills. A career path helps you find out how you might move from one job to another within a career cluster. I highly recommend creating a plan that will help you understand the path you need to take. For example, if you work in advertising and want to be a major account executive one day, be aware of the different jobs you will need to hold to get there. This could include starting as an advertising account coordinator, then moving to assistant account executive then to a major account executive position.

This month's newsletter focuses on career paths in which you and usually your boss chart a path toward your future goals. The destination, as well as the steps, experience, and development needed will assist you in achieving your career goals now and in the future. I encourage you to review the listed articles to assist in your development…the road ahead is endless.

This month’s highlights include information on ways to help advance your career during this unprecedented time as well as virtual leaning resources to assist you on your journey to success. Also, get to know your WICT GO Board Member, Nakita Rachel, Chapter Brand Ambassador.

We continue to offer developmental opportunities through WICT Global's, free online webinars. These training's are offered to both members and non-members.

I hope that you find July’s newsletter engaging and accept the challenge to build your skills to help you to advance to the next level – much success on your journey.

All the best,

Describe your role & what you love about it.

I’m currently a Supervisor in the Internet and Voice Repair department. As a Supervisor, the most rewarding aspect of my job is turning struggling agents into top performers. As a former technician, I've gained hands-on experience troubleshooting. This knowledge is passed down to my agents so they have all the tools to be successful.

How have other women inspired you or helped shape your career?

A plethora of women haves inspired and empowered me along my career path. The most recent and impactful woman is my mentor Mrs. Tara Brown. We were paired together during the 2019 WICT Greater Ohio mentorship program. She has been an incredible source of knowledge and inspiration on this journey.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

As a former field technician for ten years, I had to go up ladders and utility poles. To most people's surprise, I have a fear of heights. I never let my acrophobia stop me from doing what needed to be done.
Although it's been eight years since I was a technician, I still maintain that same efficacy into overcoming my fears.

Why do you think WICT is important?

WICT is influential because it builds unity. As women, we tend to feel alone, like it's just us against the world. The group provides a sense of family and understanding that when one person wins, we all win. WICT provides mentorship, insight, and long-lasting relationships with empowering and professional women.

What do you hope to see the WICT GO chapter accomplish this year?

This year, I hope to see our chapter gain popularity through various social networks. Although COVID 19 has intruded on our plans, I hope that we can find more innovative ways to get the word out about this fascinating group. In the future, I hope that we maintain and utilize the new technology to broaden our horizons of advertising.

Dress for Success

You’ve probably heard the saying, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. However, some people think that every day attire is perfectly acceptable for most, if not all situations in life. However, in order to propel yourself to reach the career you want, dressing for success can help.

Interviews are not the only time you should make sure you are appropriately dress. Making it a part of your normal routine shows that you are serious about your career.

Take pride in your appearance. Keeping yourself well-groomed can include a variety of factors such as:

  • Keeping your hair trimmed or styled
  • Using a lint roller and removing pet hair, dander, dust, or lint
  • Making sure your nails are clean, filed, or polished without dirt and grime
  • Making sure that your attire fits properly and isn’t too tight, too short, or too baggy

When you are well-groomed, you come across visually as more organized, trusting, and serious about your job. If your appearance is disheveled, you may come across as lazy, unorganized, and not taking your job seriously.

Spending an extra 10 minutes in the morning to polish your appearance can go the distance. Think about the job you have, the job you want, and how to dress the part for where you want to be.

Virtual Learning

With the current climate, we are all learning to adjust our daily lives while under the stresses of the global pandemic. As we continue to grow and evolve our careers, educating ourselves doesn’t have to pause. There are many ways to continue our education without being present in a physical classroom.

Virtual Learning comes in many forms. We can take courses online via the computer, or through mobile apps available on our phones and tablets. Classes to accomplish your goal are readily available at your fingertips!

edX is a collective of over 2000 free courses founded by Harvard University and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). There are courses on Business Management, Engineering, Data Science, and so much more.

There are also paid sites where you can take online courses on a variety of subjects, such as: Creative Live, Lynda and Udemy

Another option is Coursera. They have paid and free options where you can learn a skill, earn a certificate, or earn a degree. Their courses are taught by professors from Duke, Yale, Stanford, and many other accredited universities as well as top leading industry professionals from major organizations like IBM.

Another great easily accessible tool is YouTube where you can find many videos by professionals and everyday people. Whether you’re looking to refine your Excel knowledge or learn a coding skillset, the site and app are available to all.

During this uncertain time, many of us are facing new challenges such as working remotely or having to self-quarantine. Just like this Forbes article reminds us, while we cannot completely control what is happening during this pandemic, we can look for opportunities to engage our communities in positive ways.

To help you with this effort, WICT’s Online Learning Library is open to everyone. We encourage you to share the library with your network.

“If you only carry one thing throughout your entire life, let be hope. Let it be hope that better things are always ahead. Let it be hope that you can get through even the toughest of times. Let it be hope that you are stronger than any challenge that comes your way. Let it be hope that you are exactly where you are meant to be right now, and that you are on the path to where you are meant to be. Because during these times, hope will be the very thing that carries you through."
