Update on Building Access Procedures
As of Monday, August 17, GOCard access will be deactivated for faculty and staff members who have not been approved to work on campus. If you are approved to work on campus, you must show your Building Access Badge on the GU360 website to enter buildings on campus. Your badge must be green to gain access. Those with red badges will be denied access. New: Complete the COVID-19 daily symptom check-in survey in the One Medical mobile application by midnight each night before you come to campus. Recording a song with a producer and professional musicians was “one of the best days of my life” for Seth Lucash, an amateur musician and a patient at Georgetown Lombardi.
Nina Williams (NHS’22) recently co-founded, with a high school friend, the Student Coalition Against Racism, a group that she hopes will create dialogue, awareness and change.
Earlier this summer, Victoria Jennings, PhD, director and principal investigator at the Institute for Reproductive Health, retired after more than three decades at GUMC.

Newport Receives High Honor from APA
The American Psychological Association (APA) honored Elissa Newport, PhD, with a 2020 APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award at its annual meeting earlier this month. The award honors psychologists who have made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in psychology. Newport, a neurology professor, is director of the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery.
As of Saturday, August 15, Georgetown University is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus. Under this policy, smoking and other tobacco use, including carrying any burning cigarette, cigar or pipe, or any form of e-cigarette, is prohibited within Georgetown University-owned or leased buildings, grounds and vehicles. This policy applies to all GU students, faculty, staff, visitors and contractors, while in GU-owned or leased buildings, grounds or vehicles. Read more here
New Title IX Regulations Take Effect
New U.S. Department of Education regulations took effect on Friday, August 14, requiring colleges and universities to update policies that address sexual misconduct under the federal nondiscrimination law known as Title IX. An online COVID-19 symptom tracking tool developed by researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center ensures a person’s confidentiality while being able to actively monitor their symptoms.
A brain imaging study of veterans with Gulf War illness and patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, has shown that the two illnesses produce distinctly different, abnormal patterns of brain activity after moderate exercise.
