U.S. Census Bureau Data Summit for Nonprofits
|
|
Now that the 2020 Census count is complete, the U.S. Census Bureau is conducting a series of data summits in order to educate the public on how to utilize the results. Nonprofits can use census data to better understand the population and geographies they serve, to inform their programmatic service delivery, and to provide data about their mission and service areas in fundraising and advocacy efforts. The Bureau's virtual data summits have been developed to lead participants through the publicly available census data, and will include demonstrations of where to find the data, how to search for the data sets you need, and then organize, download, save, and analyze it as you wish. On April 15, the Census Bureau will host a data summit specifically for philanthropic and nonprofit partners:
Census Data for Philanthropic and Non-Profit Organizations
Thursday, April 15, 2021, 2:00pm-3:30pm
This summit will prepare nonprofit professionals to use Census Bureau statistics to inform their work and to tell engaging, relevant stories about their community’s evolving needs.

PPP Loan Application Deadline Extended
On March 30, President Biden signed the PPP Extension Act. Nonprofits and other eligible borrowers now have until May 31 to submit their PPP applications. Nonprofits can find information on applying for a First Draw Loan here, and review eligibility requirements and apply for a Second Draw Loan here.
Shuttered Venue Operators Grant
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reported that the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program application would open on April 8. After experiencing multiple technical difficulties, the portal closed shortly after its launch. SBA states that while they are working to resolve the issues, the portal will remain closed. Nonprofit applicants interested in applying can still register for their account here while the portal is under repair. SBA reports that it will put out public notice of the site's re-opening date in advance to give applicants time to prepare. The SVOG program was established through the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits and Venues Act and amended by the American Rescue Plan Act to provide over $16 billion nationally in economic relief to nonprofits and for-profit venue operators.

Nonprofit Leaders, Your DEI Commitments Did Not End With the 2020 Presidential Election
|
|
During the summer of 2020, we saw many organizations supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work. Finally, it was not enough to provide nominal support – nonprofit staff and constituents brought these topics forward and demanded real change. While we saw a burst of energy and enthusiasm for DEI work last summer, now may actually be the best time to get organized. By committing to DEI, we will strengthen our work toward our missions, too.
