Stir Crazy in Quarantine
Well, this has been an interesting week. Considering I did not leave my house during that time, that is saying something. I developed mild upper respiratory infection symptoms 10 days ago, tested positive for COVID-19 the next day, and started Paxlovid therapy that evening. I never got terribly ill, and the Paxlovid was a piece of cake. However, I developed hoarseness the following Wednesday, just as I was stopping Paxlovid.

Advanced Melanoma Survival Improves Significantly When Immunotherapy is Given Before Targeted Therapy
A clinical trial led by Georgetown Lombardi Deputy Director Michael Atkins, MD, showed a remarkable 20% advantage in the two-year overall survival rate for people with advanced melanoma who first received immunotherapy (72% survival rate) versus those who initially got targeted therapies (52% survival rate). Long-term Study Supports Link Between Inflammation and Cognitive Problems in Older Breast Cancer Survivors
Scientists are still trying to understand why many breast cancer survivors experience troubling cognitive problems for years after treatment. Inflammation is one possible culprit. A new long-term study of older breast cancer survivors led by Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, and involving several other Georgetown Lombardi members adds important evidence to that potential link. Up to three American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (IRG) Pilot Project Grants will be funded to help launch promising new projects by early career faculty members. These are one-year, non-renewable $30,000 research grants that are funded through Georgetown Lombardi’s IRG, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Cancer Immunotherapy Translational Research Program Grant
The Cancer Research Institute offers Clinic and Laboratory Integration Program (CLIP) grants to qualified scientists who are working to explore clinically relevant questions aimed at improving the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapies. The grants support basic, preclinical, and translational research that provides information that can be directly applied to optimizing cancer immunotherapy in the clinic. Proposals in all cancers are encouraged. Applicants must hold a faculty appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor (or higher rank) at the time of award activation. Funding: $200,000 over two years. LOI deadline: December 1. Full application deadline: March 1, 2023. View application guidelines.
