Updated for the week of May 21, 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hi Everyone,

Hot off the press at 11:15 this morning, we have received an updated directive from the Ministry that takes effect tomorrow (May 22). I know that you are going to be very happy to read this and it is a great step forward. I would sincerely ask for your patience over this weekend and understand that with this short notice, things may not go super smooth but we will absolutely do our best to get things running as organized as possible.

Here’s what changes starting tomorrow:
  • General Visitors can book an outdoor visit. 2 general visitors can come at a time (don’t have to be from the same household).
  •  General visitors must enter the vestibule, push the intercom button and answer the screening questions that will be asked of you. You will also be required to take your temperature. Then, you will wait outside while we get the person you are here to visit.
  • General visitors must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose at all times. (can use your own cloth mask)
  • General visitors must maintain physical distancing at all times.
  • Children are welcome with their mask on but do count in the total number of visitors at a time. Children under the age of 2 years do not have to wear a mask and do not count on the total number of visitors.
  • The outdoor visit can take place anywhere in the front or sides of the JMPC property including the front community garden area. Please be mindful of giving other families space when they are here visiting.
  • There are 4 spots available every hour during the day for general visitors to book their visit. (excluding meal times)
  • The 2 designated essential caregivers can visit at the same time outside AND can also visit at the same time as the 2 general visitors should they wish to.  NOTE: There is no change to the interior visits (ie only 1 designated essential caregiver can visit inside the home at a time.)
  • To help us, we would ask essential caregivers to pick up and drop off their resident themselves if they are taking them outside.
  • There is no time limit for anyone’s visit. For general visitors, it would be great if you could let the RSA know when you would like them to come back and get the resident.

It will be very helpful, for our outdoor visits if you are able to bring a lawn chair for yourself to use. It isn’t required, but this will help to ensure we have space and seating areas for people coming to the Home.

We do have sunscreen as well as sun hats at the front entrance for residents as it sounds like the weather is going to be sunny and warm.

How is everyone’s garden and flower beds coming? Later in this newsletter you will see Spring Meadow and Rose Garden residents getting their beds ready.

Flower Gardens: The JMPC gardens have been a topic of much discussion with the residents even through the winter months. As you may recall, last year, the County gardener was not able to be up here working on our gardens and this was upsetting for the residents. This year, we are happy to have the County gardener back, plus we have the activation staff working on the interior gardens and things are really shaping up! We interviewed residents to find out what flowers and vegetables they wanted to see in the garden spaces and thanks to some great family donations we were able to fulfill their wishes! We are all definitely looking forward to many days outside enjoying these beautiful spaces.

Provincial Lockdown: All of our practices in place continue with no changes impacting LTC announced for this week.

Ministry Visits: We are happy to share with you that we had inspections this past week from the Ministry of Labour specifically focussing on our COVID and general infection control practices with great results. They were very pleased with our screening process and cleaning practices. We also had the Ministry of Long Term Care in the Home to conduct an Infection Prevention and Control inspection. They too were very pleased with our processes in place with no areas of non compliance issued.

Question of the Day
How does the cooling system work the best at the Home?

The warm weather is finally here! Though this means BBQ season, longer days and all those things that we look forward to all winter can now begin, it also means we have to be aware of our Home and the systems it has to keep our residents safe and comfortable.
The home has 13 HVAC units that supply cooling to all common areas, resident rooms, corridors and service areas. Please remember the following this summer:

-          Windows should remain closed. Though a gentle breeze sounds nice, the warm air entering the room increases the room temperature and puts a strain on our HVAC systems which increases the temperature of the entire home area.

-          Resident room doors should remain open whenever possible to increase air flow throughout the building. The HVAC system was engineered and balanced with these doors open.

-          Any door with an automatic door closer must remain closed. The HVAC systems are engineered and balanced with these doors closed, propping them open will have a negative impact on the air flow and the systems performance.

-          Blinds and curtains should remain closed as much as possible. This reduces UV light from entering the home which significantly increases the temperature of the room.
Pharmacy Vaccination Clinics (age group 18+)
Local pharmacies participating in the COVID-19 vaccine pharmacy clinic pilot are now listed on the KFLA Public Health website. Contact the pharmacy directly to book an appointment. Please do not call KFL&A Public Health. Appointments are only currently available for those 18+
Provincial Vaccine Booking (age group 18+)
Booking online using the provincial online vaccine booking tool offers the fastest access to available clinic appointments. At this time adults 18 years of age and older are eligible.

We know everyone is eager to receive the vaccine, but we are asking those not yet eligible to avoid accessing the booking tool or calling the service desk.

Call 1-833-943-3900 (TTY 1-866-797-0007), open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. if you require assistance with booking or have questions about COVID-19 vaccines.
COVID-19 Testing for Essential Caregivers
You are required to have 2 COVID tests each week.

You will need your regular COVID swab that you have at a COVID Assessment Centre which you will need to have at some point between Wednesday and Sunday each week. (please do not have your tests on back to back days)
The second swab is the Rapid Antigen Test which will be done at JMPC. We will be offering this test on Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s at the times listed below:

10:00am – 7:00pm each day

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff.
Shift change that occurs during testing times are 2:30 and 6:30pm

Exception: If you visit only once per week then you only require the one weekly COVID swab from the COVID Assessment Centre.

The Rapid Antigen Test must be done here at JMPC and will take place in the tea room area. Staff will provide you direction at the time. This test is strictly a surveillance screening test for those who present without symptoms. It is viewed as an addition to the screening tool process.

Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.
Perishable Items: Food being brought in for a resident must be in a container that can be wiped down with our wipes and they will then be delivered to your resident right away.

All other items will be kept for 24 hours prior to being taken to the resident.

Menu
  • Here is the week’s menu for May 24 - May 30, 2021

The residents have requested a few items to be added to the menu. They would like boiled potatoes, which we added to Saturday dinner instead of mashed potatoes; turkey sausage which we added in place of chicken salad on Wednesday; and spaghetti with meat sauce instead of meatballs on Saturday.

We are also having our second BBQ next week and the residents will be having a BBQ chicken burger on a bun with lettuce, mayo, and tomatoes, along with a tossed salad, and a chocolate covered ice cream bar for dessert.

You will also notice a change in the format of the menu. This is because the menu program received some updates.

Absences from the Home
During the Provincial Stay at Home Order: Residents (like all of us within Ontario) are permitted to leave their home for the following reasons:
o  To attend important medical appointments
o  To get exercise outside (independently or with their designated essential caregiver)
o  To get essential groceries (independently or with their designated essential caregiver)
o  To get essential pharmacy items (independently or with their designated essential caregiver)
(It is our hope that these last two outing types will be very limited to keep unnecessary exposure risks low, given that JMPC does ensure food/pharmacy items for residents)

Once the Provincial Stay at Home Order is lifted: There are some additional improvements that you will see. They include:
Addition of 2 types of Outings
o  Short Term Outings – Leaving the property for social or other reason but not overnight.
o  Temporary Outing – Leaving the property and includes overnight of one or more nights.
Manager Point of Contact
To notify for absences or for general inquiries related to COVID restrictions:
In an effort to streamline this process for you, we have attached a form that you can email to a specific manager based on the resident's Home area. Alternatively, if you would prefer, you can phone the appropriate manager and they will assist you.
Soon you will be coming back into the Home and we thought it would be great if you could start putting some faces to names.

Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building
A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

This training needs to be completed prior to your first visit and then monthly thereafter.

Infection Control from the desk of Emily Sarley
The hot weather is definitely here and we all need to work together to support residents during times of high heat. If you have not had an opportunity to review your loved one's closet, we would encourage you to do so. Please consider the space provided and remove items that are no longer worn to ensure room to move in these spaces. Changing out winter sweaters and thicker clothing to lighter pants, shorts, and tops will help to keep residents comfortable over the warmer months.
Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiver prior to their visit in order to be permitted into the Home.

Should the resident/POA wish to change an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted in advance.

Do you struggle with having a conversation with your person? Here is a helpful tool that you may enjoy incorporating into your visit. This wouldn’t be a tool that you would want to work through in one visit but something that you could work away at. Wouldn’t this be a great document to encourage grandchildren to do together with their grandparent (or great grandparent)!
Around the Home
Rose Garden and Spring Meadow residents were busy this past weekend prepping and planting their flower beds.  Perfect way to spend the day Saturday!
Enjoying lemonade from our lemonade stand.
Memory Café in Lilac Knoll. This included banana chocolate chip loaf that they had made the day before, favorite music and good conversation.
