UCSF CCMBM Core Services Newsletter - January 2022
"As a member of the CCMBM, I was able to work with Dr. Wenhan Chang, Director of the SBB Core, to increase access to newer technologies, such as the microCT and nanostring mRNA analyses of bone tissue, for my participation in the Collaborative VA Medical Research grant application process."

-- Daniel Bikle, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Dermatology, VAMC, UCSF
The Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics (SBB) Core now has a new Scanco µCT50 microCT scanner at Parnassus! MicroCT uses X-ray imaging and computed tomography to produce 3D images of very high resolution over a range of materials. This technique is the gold-standard for assessing bone morphology in rodents. The advantages of using microCT are: 1) direct 3D measurement of trabecular microarchitecture and cortical morphology [see the two images on the left], 2) compared with histology, microCT enables imaging and analysis of a larger volume of interest, 3) rapid assessment of bone histomorphometric parameters, and 4) scanning is nondestructive, thus samples can be used subsequently for other assays, such as histology or mechanical testing.

In addition to the new scanner, the SBB Core is excited to announce that it will start using the web-based iLabs platform to streamline project consultations and billing for microCT services. All users are invited to use iLabs, which requires a one-time registration or sign in with your UCSF credentials. Once logged in, navigate to the iLab SBB Core page. iLabs will enable you to place service requests, provide required approvals, and monitor progress.

Please contact, Mohamed Habib, Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics Core manager for more information on these services. To learn about other SBB services and contacts, visit our website.
Did you miss our last seminar or technical workshop? Or are you looking for imaging equipment or skeletal biology standard operating protocols? Members have access to workshops and seminar recordings, protocols, and archived newsletters on the CCMBM Members Only Site. Never miss out on all things related to the Center!

For login assistance or questions on the members only site, inquire with Mary Tran.
Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics and Imaging Cores are offering service discounts to Early Stage Investigator and Trainee members. The Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Study Design Core is also offering up to 6 hours of free UCSF Clinical and Translational Institute (CTSI) consultation time for all CCMBM members. Please contact each Core to utilize these member discounts.
