IN THIS ISSUE
Join us for Thanksgiving Day Morning Prayer, which will be livestreamed at 10:00 am on Thanksgiving Day on Facebook and YouTube. The bulletin for the service is available HERE.

The church office will be closed on Thursday & Friday, November 26 & 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.

Rector's Ramblings

Years ago, the New York Times ran an editorial just before Thanksgiving entitled, "Thursday Vanishes." It noted how Thanksgiving always falls on a Thursday, never a weekend, which makes it a disruptive and inconvenient holiday. It takes up the whole week, regardless of whatever else we had intended for this week. Yet even with its disruptive nature, Thanksgiving is special. For all that it takes to load up and head to Thanksgiving dinner, wherever that may be, something happens when we gather for the meal. Once all are there and we sit at table, it is sacred - Thursday disappears, and Thanksgiving takes over. That matches with my experience as well.
So, what happens during a pandemic, when we don't gather around the table for a meal, or at least not with the sort of gatherings we're used to? Is Thanksgiving still "worth it?" The real inconvenience is the fact that we have to try to have this holiday at a time we're literally being advised not to travel and not to gather. We want, we may even yearn for Thanksgiving to be transcendent. Come Friday, will it have been?

Worship

This will be a liturgy that will incorporate children and adults who are present - all who want to serve will be able. We will need a candle lighter (1 for each service), a few readers, maybe even a song leader! We hope to see you at 10:20 am, under the tent, for all the Sundays during Advent. Enjoy Lessons and Carols from Sewanee -
Sunday, December 6, 2020, at 8:00 pm

While we won't be able to gather in person, members of the Sewanee family will have access to a digital version of the 61st Annual Festival Service of Lessons and Carols, adapted for the unprecedented circumstances of this year, beginning on Sunday, December 6, at 8:00 pm EST.

For those able to gather together safely, you might consider hosting a public screening. If an in-person event is not an option, why not host a virtual event on the platform of your choice?

A downloadable version of the video will be available HERE beginning on Sunday, December 6, at 8:00 pm, EST.

Please let us know if you plan to host a gathering for those in your parish or diocese. We would love to share a photo of your event with the broader Sewanee community!

For more information, please contact Bess Turner at [email protected].
Christmas Poinsettias
You may purchase beautiful memorial poinsettias to remember a loved one and decorate our worship spaces for Christmas. The cost is $30 per poinsettia and checks should be made payable to the Christ Church Flower Guild. Please send checks and the names of those you wish to honor to Ethel Horton, at 402 Palm Court St. Simons Island, 31522 by Sunday, December 13.
Join the Diocesan Virtual Choir!
From Canon Joshua Varner:
This is a different Christmas for many of us. It's harder to be together in person, and technology can only go so far. But even when we are distanced, we can celebrate together through music. For Christmas this year we are offering at least one virtual choir piece, Joy to the World, which is familiar to many. Please join us in singing together for Christmas!

In order to sing this hymn, all you need is a pair of earbuds, a computer, and a smartphone that can record video. You will download the appropriate guide track and then sing along with the guide track in your earbuds while you video yourself using your phone. We need your submission no later than Monday, December 14, in order to incorporate it into the final choir.

In order to participate, you need the full instructions, which can be found here: https://bit.ly/JoytotheWorldChoir. The instructions include links to written music, guide tracks for melody, harmony, and descant (if desired) and instructions on how to submit your video once you're done. Many thanks to Kathleen Turner, Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church, Frederica, for creating these tracks.

Please read the instructions carefully before you record anything! Contact Canon Varner at  [email protected] with your questions.

Christmas Pageant - The Movie!
Christmas Eve memories from 2019...
With social distancing guidelines keeping us from gathering all of our children together to retell the story of a Most Holy Night, we still plan to get as many kids involved with the pageant this year as possible. We want all Christ Church Kids - from babies to young adults to feel they have a place to shine like the star in our production of Pageant - The Movie!

Email Mother Katie at [email protected] to sign up your child or sign up using the link HERE. Let me know what role they would like to play! We need sheep, shepherds, angels, Gabriel, Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and Magi. Also if your child has a strong desire to narrate parts of the story we will do that as well!

Once you sign up, Mother Katie will set up a time to record your part!

We were overwhelmed by your response to the call for more foods and more funds and are happy to report that now we've already got a head start for our December Christmas Basket packing. Thank you, Christ Church! And a big thank you to all of our youth, who organized all the food for Tuesday's packing!

Christmas at Sea for Our International Seafarers
Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7 and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a ditty bag with 12 - 15 item from the list found below and bringing it to either the Parish House, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

Honor a Loved One - Adopt a Backpack Buddy for Christmas
If you've thought about adopting a young buddy, or have had one in the past, this is a great time to think about doing it in honor of a friend or loved one for Christmas.
