April 18, “Dirty Earth Day,” Rev. Sam Trumbore, with the Green Sanctuary Committee
What could be better to focus on for an Earth Day celebration than dirt! Could dirt be one way to help us dig our way out of increasing carbon in the atmosphere? All that fossil carbon came out of the ground. It needs to find its way back there!
Music provided by Elena Karpoff
April 25, “Becoming Wise,” Rev. Sam Trumbore
Wisdom is different than knowledge, skills or understanding. Wisdom is knowing when to use knowledge and skills. That wisdom isn’t as easy to learn. Maybe it takes a lifetime to become wise. We’ll reflect together on the process of becoming wise.
Music provided by special guest: Tanya Hotalen, recorder;

The Albany UU Service year continues through June 13
Summer Services begin Sunday, June 20, 10:00 AM
Lighting Our Chalice
Lighting and extinguishing the chalice during our Sunday services is a meaningful and important ritual in our UU tradition. We would like to make this ritual more personal and special for our congregation by featuring congregants, i.e. you and your family!
You are invited to record videos of lighting and extinguishing a chalice and saying a few words about what the ritual means to you. Then we can use these videos in future Zoom services.
Leah Purcell posted a lovely blog piece about chalice lighting, which you can find here. Leah writes eloquently about both the meaning and significance of the ritual – and the logistics of making/getting a chalice and recording yourself.
Check out Leah’s blog, and please consider creating a personal contribution for our Sunday services. Assistance with the logistics will gladly be provided. Thank you so much!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS!
|
|
Annual reports due April 26!
It's been a challenging year for all of us, but we have adapted and done wonderful things this year despite the crazy. Let's celebrate those. Bring on your reports! If your team did not meet due to the pandemic, that's ok, just let Tammy know.
Our Annual Meeting will be on May 16 online. The Annual Report will also be online only again this year.
The deadline for reports is Monday, April 26. Team leaders, trustees and staff have recently been notified of the collection process and deadline by email--if you have any questions about the annual report process, contact Church Administrator Tammy Hathaway: admin@albanyuu.org.
Endowment Trust Announces Annual Granting Capacity
Each calendar year the endowment trustees use a prescribed formula based on income from its investments to calculate the amount of money available for special project grants. The 2021 granting capacity is $20,000.
If you have an idea for a special project consistent with the congregation’s mission please apply. Applications may be submitted through the Albany UU website:
The total value of the endowments as of February 28 is $1,064,953 which includes a no interest building loan to the congregation of $575,000.
Last year the Board of Trustees established a second endowment, the income from which will be used to support the ongoing operations of the congregation. The Operations Trust may be large enough to generate some investment income to contribute to the 2022-23 budget.
Members and friends donate to the endowments to commemorate life’s milestones and memories, joys and sorrows. You may also support either (or both) of the endowments with planned giving by a bequest in your Will.
Food Pantry Donation Drive and Easter Hunt in Washington Park April 3
There's still time to help us put some food on pantry shelves and provide some fun for the children. This year the RE program is asking congregants to donate packaged, non-perishable food to give to local food pantries. Here are the guidelines and suggestions for donations. We’re planning a “Pantry Food Hunt” in Washington Park on the morning of Saturday, April 3 where instead of hunting for Easter Eggs, kids will hunt for the hidden food panty items. In return for their efforts, they’ll receive some fun springtime surprises to take home. Please bring your food panty donations to the bin outside Leah Purcell’s house, 218 Ormond St, Albany 12208. No worries about parking; you can use her semi-circle driveway. Her house is easy to get to from Albany or via Rte. 85.
My Grandmother’s Hands Book group/workshop
Trauma therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of trauma and body-centered psychology. Creating our Belief Statements - What It Means to Be A People of Becoming - By Leah Purcell, Director of Religious Education and Family Ministry
From our Soul Matters partners on the theme for April, BECOMING
It’s become popular in our society to talk about spiritual journeys as a process of living into your full or true self, of letting the authentic seed inside you unfold. We UU’s agree. We even enshrined it in our principles that celebrate each of our unique seeds (inherent worth) and unique journeys (a free and responsible search). Often the journey of becoming is guided by one’s credo. These statements of belief and purpose ground us, keep us on track and remind us who we most want to be.
Many of us adults have not really spent much time considering our credo. However, we support our youth to so as a is a core goal of our Coming of Age program. And some adults participate in the annual “This I Believe” service.
You may know Coming of Age by its former name - Rite of Passage. Our ninth and tenth graders are invited to participate in it; it’s separate from our Sunday morning high school youth group. In this program, each of the youth select from a pool of trusted, longtime, and active members of the congregation to be their mentor for the year. The youth and mentors meet with me several times a month via zoom and the youth/mentor pairs meet on their own at least once a month via zoom or in person socially distanced. The program covers UU history, philosophy and theology, governance, religious services, and social justice work. The mentors help the youth explore and discover their own guiding principles by which they make their decisions and remind them of who they want to be. We tell the youth that their belief statements are presentations of what they believe and what they value right now in their lives. It’s a snapshot of where they are now. The Coming of Age will present their believe statements to the congregation in a service they will create for the Sunday service on June 13th. June might seem far away, but with warmer weather on its way, we are urging the youth to sit down this month to hammer out their statements.
As you can imagine, despite the adult’s best efforts to support and reassure the youth, this task is daunting to them. How many of us have written down our credo, let alone present it to the whole congregation? As I said, some adults in fact do! You may have heard some of your fellow Albany UU’s present at our “This I Believe” service in which adults present their belief statements. This year the “This I Believe” service is May 16th.
So, this month, I invite you to consider what you might put in your believe statement. This might be a way of being in spirit with the adults presenting in the “This I Believe” service and with our Coming of Age youth - a way just to send them good vibes as they get to work.
Our Soul Matters partners have offered us these credo-like pieces below. You might spend some time with them and figure out which one is the one you could have written. Think about why exactly it spoke to you. Was it a particular line or two? Or something more general?
Consider keeping your chosen piece (or part of) in front of you for a few weeks, allowing you the occasion to read it and see it almost every day.
Oh, and if you end up inspired to write your very own credo, by all means, go for it!
