New Alliance Formed to Strengthen Tobacco Control Policies, Protect Michigan Kids from Tobacco

To combat Michigan's growing youth tobacco epidemic, a new statewide alliance has launched committed to strengthening tobacco control policies to better protect the state's young people. The GCPC is proud to be one of the 50+ organizations who have signed on to support this initiative.

Michigan spends over $4.5 billion annually on smoking-related health costs and nearly 30 percent of cancer deaths in Michigan are attributable to tobacco products, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

"Tobacco is the number one preventable cause of death in Michigan. Nationally e-cigarette use among high school students has increased by 135 percent in the last two years alone," said Jodi Radke, regional director for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. "Our alliance is committed to reversing this dangerous trend and protecting our kids' futures."

Community Playlist

Last month, Kelly Oginsky sat down with Kristen Centers-Young from Flint Odyssey House on their Community Playlist episode that airs on their low power FM radio station, 92.1 WFOV.

This program is funded by Region 10 and a grant from the Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions as a prevention initiative to help the community rise above the influence.

Big thank you to Flint Odyssey House for inviting us to participate and discuss the work and various projects going on at the Genesee County Prevention Coalition.

Substance Misuse Prevention for Young Adults

In response to the charge of the 21st Century Cures Act to disseminate information on evidence-based practices and service delivery models, the National Mental Health and Substance Use Policy Lab has developed the Evidence-Based Resource Guide Series focused on the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders and mental illnesses. With this specific resource guidebook, SAMHSA's goal is to inform parents, families, practitioners and communities of prevention strategies for young adults ages 18-25, a group at increased risk for substance misuse.
