MFGA eBulletin - MAY 2021
From the Desk of the Executive Director
Things are so very dry across most parts of southern Manitoba, in some areas, grass fires are threatening fields, infrastructure and properties in these tinderbox conditions. Rain is in the forecast leading up to May Long Weekend, hopefully it arrives where most needed. Experts are saying we are going to need a lot of moisture to help us all deal with these conditions. On the herd and farm front, it is really good to see the Province of Manitoba come forward with their services available for agricultural producers affected by dry conditions yesterday.

As pointed out by MFGA Chair Larry Wegner in his second 2021 editorial (below), the time is now to utilize the Manitoba Agriculture Resource Development (MARD) expertise and services and also take time to speak with neighbours, seek more information and help each other on water needs, especially around cattle herds. Larry has some really great advice on managing dry times. MFGA Hay Expert John McGregor also brings forward the MFGA Hay Report and provides some great intel on farming during dry times as well.

Recently, our MFGA Board and staff rolled up our sleeves and tapped out what we feel is a very timely, very well-thought out update to our MFGA Carbon Position. This exercise was led by MFGA producers and fortified by the expertise and knowledge of the ex-officio members of our MFGA Board.

I encourage you all to read our document posted below and better understand MFGA’s carbon position. Essentially, this is what MFGA’s producer-led board of directors and staff want to see included in the many carbon dialogues and actions underway.

This week, our 2021 Regenerative Agriculture Conference continued to take shape as we hammered out the last of our speaker line-up. More exciting news there, our speaker line-up looks amazing. Also this week, we welcomed Trevor and Cheryl Branvold and their sons Brett and Carter of GBT Angus from Wawota, Saskatchewan as MFGA Bundled Silver Sponsors (Annual and Conference). The Branvold’s have been big parts of the MFGA mix since our first conference in 2018 and we appreciate their support and friendship. Equally exciting, our colleagues at Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation are providing excellent support at the MFGA Gold Sponsor Level and Nutrien Ag Solutions, a valuable and counted-on MFGA sponsor each year, has also stepped up as a MFGA Bundled Gold Sponsor to ensure a profile with MFGA outreach and conference related items.

A huge thank you to all of you for your continued wonderful and valued support. As reinforced constantly, MFGA cannot do our best work without your support.

Muchos Grasses All,
Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director
