Back to School Start Days/Dates
Now that the 2020-2021 school year is complete, we have already started planning for next school year!

If you remember, last year we started with a "slow start" where we brought smaller groups of students in at a time so we could go over COVID-19 protocols and give our students and staff the opportunity to begin to form relationships.

We received feedback from our teachers who said that they really appreciated the opportunity to begin forming relationships with students in a smaller group.

We will be staggering the start of the 2021-2022 school year as you see below. Please note the change in start times by building.
KHS Students Earn National Awards for Community Service
Community Service is an important component of education at Kings High School. Students are required to perform at least 50 community service hours in order to graduate.

Kings High School is delighted to announce 93 students are being recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and InnerView in the fourth Annual National Community Service Awards. This program, open to all U.S. students, has been designed to connect student community service activities and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform our world. The Kroger Co. is presenting the second annual Zero Hero Awards to students for taking action to help create communities free of hunger and waste.

Students from Kings High School delivered the most impact for SDG 3 - Good Health & Well-Being. The collective activity of our students this school year, delivered 8,448 service hours and personal activities to address local needs. This achievement earned an additional distinction of the Emerald Award for outstanding impact.

“We are grateful for the efforts of every Zero Hero among us, especially the 30 student honorees from Kings High School who serve their communities in ways that advance Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social and environmental impact plan,” said Denise Osterhues, senior director of sustainability and social impact for Kroger. “Through this partnership with InnerView, we’ve connected more than 2,600 Zero Hero student leaders across 35 states to national subject matter experts and resources that build greater awareness of critical issues and inspire meaningful volunteer service, leadership, and career exploration.”

Laps for Literacy
The students at J.F. Burns Elementary have been reading furiously to win this year's Laps for Literacy.

From January to April students log every minute of extra-curricular reading they do. Those minutes are added up and calculated into laps that Mrs. Montag has to walk around Landen Lake. This year students read a record-breaking total of 857,771 minutes!

This year’s Top Readers were: Kindergarten - AJ Bersaglia; 1st grade- Gracelyn Bersaglia; 2nd grade - Joseph Schmidt; 3rd grade - Evelyn Ross; and 4th grade - Sophia Serrano; Top Classes were Ms. Caruso, Mrs. Roewer, Mrs. Tuggle, Mrs. Gray, and Mrs. Bowman.

Mrs. Montag walked six laps around Landen Lake – 18 miles! The entire student body lined the J.F. Burns drive to cheer on Mrs. Montag, the top readers, and classes as they began the first lap.

This year's Lemonade Stand also raised a whopping $1066.50 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Way to go! Keep reading this summer!
SLE 2nd Grade Biography Reports
Students in Miss Pagan's 2nd-grade class at South Lebanon Elementary recently researched a famous American through books and websites. Then, they took that information and created a Google Slide presentation about their biography topic.

Students created a project and postage stamp to represent their person.
Finally, they presented their information in costume to their class.

SLE 1st Grade Animal Wax Museum
Last week, the first grade classes at South Lebanon Elementary participated in an Animal Wax Museum. The students researched an animal, wrote a report, and presented on their chosen animal to parents, friends and teachers.

The students were very creative with their presentations and costumes. You could find many different animals such as giraffes, eagles, lions, snow leopards, and more.

Immunization Requirements for 7th & 12th Grade
shot_preparation.jpg
Students entering 7th grade will need to have one dose of meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine and one dose of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine.

Students entering 12th grade will need to have a second dose of the meningococcal vaccine. The second dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday. If the first dose of the meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.

Ohio law allows a 14-day grace period for the beginning of the school year. If a student does not obtain the required vaccinations and provide written documentation (immunization record) or an exemption note to the school, the school will exclude that student on the 15th day of the 2021/2022 school year
until the immunization requirement is fulfilled.

Your child may have already received this vaccine at his/her most recent check-up. If not, please schedule an appointment with your primary health care provider. In addition, the Warren County Health Department provides a variety of clinic hours offering vaccinations at a low cost. Their number is 513-695-1468.

Please send updated vaccination records that reflect that these requirements have been met to your child’s school nurse.

Head's UP - Road Closure Ahead
Construction of the bridge on U.S. Route 22 over the Little Miami River will close U.S. 22 to motorists beginning on Monday, June 7 for up to 50 days.

This closure could significantly impact traffic on other local routes, especially in Landen and Maineville. The current detours will include Columbia Road, Western Row Road, I-71, and S.R. 48.

Due to anticipated increased traffic volumes on Old 3C Highway and other local routes, the left-turn movements at Socialville-Foster Road and Old 3C Highway and at Foster-Maineville Road and Old 3C will be prohibited. In addition, the Little Miami Scenic Trail will be closed where it crosses Old 3C Highway, although the trail will be open to the north and to the south of Old 3C. These changes are being implemented to ensure safety and minimize the overall impact on motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Summer Reading Programs
The Summer Slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during summer break actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around.

We have provided you with some Summer Reading Programs in our area to help your students. Thank you for supporting your student to prevent the Summer Slide!
