July 2021
Welcome to our LBPD Newsletter!

This month, we are excited to highlight our North Division Neighborhood Walks program. Since we started the program, we’ve seen a real difference being made in the area.  From June 14 to July 23, calls for service were down 5.7%, and shootings were down 67%. In addition, North Division officers have made over 400 community contacts. We are proud to see the positive change happening as the partnership between our police officers and our community continues to grow stronger.

KEEP UP WITH THE LBPD
Coffee with a Cop!
Last week, our West Division team partnered with the Starbucks on Willow Street and Long Beach Boulevard for a “Coffee with a Cop” event. We really enjoyed the opportunity to chat with some of our Long Beach neighbors… and learning how to work the drive-thru and make a latte was a fun bonus!
Explorer Academy
Congratulations to our Explorer Academy Class #1. Over the course of last week, these young explorers went through various tests and training similar to those in police academies. We are very proud of the character and determination they demonstrated!
Etch and Catch Event
To help support residents prevent potential catalytic converter thefts, we partnered with the City of Long Beach’s Fleet Services Bureau to host our second free catalytic converter etching event. The event was open to any Long Beach resident to have their vehicle's VIN or license plate number etched onto the catalytic converter of their vehicle. This process can assist LBPD investigations if the catalytic converter is stolen and may also discourage criminals from stealing it. We’re proud to have etched 250 residents’ catalytic converters during this event.

Additional Etch-and-Catch events are being planned—keep an eye on our social media channels for future announcements!
On the Patrol Beat
Over the past few weeks, South Division Bike officers have been distributing eScooter safety flyers to the community. In partnership with the Downtown Long Beach Alliance, officers have been educating eScooter riders with information on the laws and local ordinances that are in place for their safety, as well as the safety of the public. Thank you to our Bike officers for taking that extra step to ensure the community's well-being.

Earlier this month, graveyard officers were about to end their shift when they received a call involving a lost child who was found walking alone on a sidewalk. Officer Bailey and his fellow officers immediately responded to the area, quickly located the child's family, and safely reunited them.
Police work is often unpredictable, and whether it's responding to an emergency situation or making sure a child gets home safe, our officers are ready to walk hand-in-hand with our community to keep them safe.
Officers joined a recent career day event at Admiral Kidd Park Summer Camp to share more about what it means to be a police officer. Our officers loved participating!
South Division officers enjoyed stopping by a community event at Drake Park and saying hi to all the kids! We love seeing everyone out in the park enjoying summer!
Over the weekend, Commander Burford and West Division officers stopped by a few community events in the AOC7 and Wrigley areas.
LBPD Seeking Volunteers for Trauma Intervention Program (TIP)
We're pleased to announce our partnership with the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) to bring their much-needed services to our Long Beach community. Through this program, local volunteers are trained to respond to traumatic incidents within the City at the request of Police, Fire, and Hospital personnel to provide emotional aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events and their families in the first few hours following a tragedy. The LBPD seeks Long Beach community members who want to make a difference in their communities and partake as TIP volunteers.
