May 7, 2021
Dear Peter Hobart community,

This week was Staff Appreciation week and we have been showered with kind words, treats and lunches. Thank you to all of our amazing Peter Hobart families and community. We are truly grateful for you and have felt your love!

As we near our last month of school I want to recognize the journey that we all have been on together. We could not have done this without you and without each and every one of the people pictured below. I am so fortunate to work alongside these incredible individuals. Thank you for all of the love and commitment to our students and Peter Hobart!

Have a wonderful weekend and have a Happy Mother's Day.

Sincerely,
Kari

May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Annually, this is an opportunity to listen and learn about the diversity within AAPI communities as well as how deep the connections are to all facets of American history. Students will learn about this month in age-appropriate classroom lessons and activities. To access more resources in Minnesota, visit the Coalition of Asian American Leaders.

COVID-19 vs. Allergies: Do I Need to Quarantine?
Some symptoms of general illness such as seasonal allergies, colds, and/or flu overlap with symptoms of COVID-19. If a parent/guardian/family member believes their child/student has any illness - which displays the same symptoms as COVID-19 - the student, and other household members, are not allowed to attend school until:

  • The symptomatic student tests negative for COVID-19; or
  • An alternative diagnosis (such as allergies, cold, or flu) is received from the child’s/student’s health care provider in written form and copied to the school health office.

If the student with symptoms does not test for COVID-19, or receive an alternative diagnosis from their health care provider, they would need to isolate at home for 10 days and household members would follow the 14 day quarantine protocol.
COVID-19 Testing for Students and Families
There are many options to get tested, depending on your needs, and each option is available to you at NO COST. You can even schedule appointments for the whole family at the same time.

There are COVID-19 community testing sites across Minnesota, in addition to local hospitals and clinics. You can make an appointment ahead of time or walk in. You can also use the COVID-19 test at home program.

For more information about scheduling group appointments for your family at a community testing site, visit COVID-19 Community Testing.
Ways to find a COVID-19 Vaccine
WHERE TO LOOK:

  • Sign up for the Vaccine Connector (mn.gov/covid19/vaccine/connector/connector.jsp). People who sign up are randomly selected for COVID-19 vaccinations through the Community Vaccination Program.
  • Check or call online at: Pharmacies. Local and national chains are vaccinating people; Health care systems/clinics. At many places, you do not need to be a patient to get vaccinated there.
  • Find COVID-19 vaccines near you with VaccineFinder (vaccinefinder.org/). You can sort by vaccine product.
  • Check your county’s website or call them to see if they offer vaccination opportunities.

TIPS FOR GETTING A VACCINE:

  • Check back often for new appointments. You may also have luck looking for appointments at a certain time of day or be able to join a waitlist.
  • Know when appointments are released. Some sites release new appointments on a specific day or time; make a note to check in then. You can find this information on their website or by calling.
  • Know which vaccination sites you are eligible for. Some sites are still prioritizing earlier eligibility groups.
  • Preregister or have information easily available. Some sites let you enter some of your information before looking for an appointment for faster scheduling. Some sites only hold appointment for a short time. Turn on email or text alerts so you can schedule an appointment quickly if one becomes available.
  • Be patient. As more vaccines become available, it will be easier to get an appointment.

Good News Regarding Healthy Meals for Students
The Biden administration on Tuesday issued an extension for free school lunch through 2022 as part of its effort to reopen schools safely amid the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will allow school meal programs to resume serving FREE MEALS to students this fall and will extend the programs through the school year. It will still be important for families to complete the Application for Educational Benefits also known as the Free and Reduced Meals application to help generate additional funding to support students districtwide.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer Reminder

Students who elected to remain in distance learning continue to be eligible for Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) funds. To be eligible, K-12 students must qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students who chose to participate in distance learning this year will receive $130 for each month they were doing distance learning for at least 19 school days in the month and $75 for each month they were doing distance learning for between 11 and 18 school days. If you have yet to apply for these benefits, they can be retroactive to the beginning of the year.

More information is available in multiple languages at https://mn.gov/dhs/p-ebt/.

SLP Grad, Vanthay Hong, shares his first book with Peter Hobart Elementary School!
Vanthay Hong is a St. Louis Park graduate and currently resides in NYC. He sent this book to Peter Hobart because he grew up here and his sister went to this school. He was inspired by his nephew to write a book that he could see himself in.

Here's an article about Hong's book in the St. Louis Park Echo (The student-run news site of St. Louis Park High School).

Through a partnership with Seeds Feeds, Peter Hobart will be installing a small schoolyard garden in May! A larger Schoolyard Urban Farm will be installed at Aquila this spring with support from Seeds Feeds as well as the HDR Foundation. Both gardens will be used to teach youth and teens throughout the district. It is exciting to have these projects happen in conjunction with each other.

We are anticipating needing volunteers to help transport soil, compost, beds, and plants from Minneapolis to Peter Hobart on Friday, May 14th between 10am-4pm. We will also need interested families to help water, weed, and care for the garden this summer. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Becky Beerling at beerlingrebecca@gmail.com. Both projects will be discussed in more detail at the May 24th PTO meeting. Hope to see you there!
