Jason Madden Empowers Students To Reach Their Goals

Jason Madden grew up in Hamilton, ON, and graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. A weeklong trip to the west coast awoke his soul, and Vancouver, BC quickly became the city he now calls home. This trip changed his life. He exited the corporate world in search of personal healing. This led him to study at IHN, where he graduated with First Class Honours and Class Valedictorian in 2017. Since October 2017, Jason has worked from the Vancouver campus as Campus Manager and Program Advisor and recently began Program Advising for IHN Online Pacific. Jason plays an active role in various departments, including co-producing IHN's Guest Speaker series. He is inspired daily by the students and faculty and feels honoured to be a part of their IHN journey.

Learning How To Achieve A Healthy & Sustainable Food Future

We logged into a Nutrition and the Environment lecture with Kathrin Brunner to capture an image of the students learning mid-class. At this moment, the students were learning about sulfites and their effect on the body. This course presents nutrition principles that promote health and prevent disease, based on an underlying philosophy that environments maintain and promote health and that individuals have a right to self-determination and self-knowledge. Topics will consider the safety of our food supply, naturally occurring and environmental toxins in foods, microbes, and food poisoning. Students learn about critical ecological problems that our society faces, including degradation of the biosphere, toxification of the planet, global weather changes, and the current water crisis. Other areas of study include toxins in personal care products, chemical sensitivities, and managing environmental sensitivities.

Kathrin Brunner Shares Material From The Con Ed Course

Join us Monday, May 17 at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 pm PT for a 1 hour webinar, as Kathrin Brunner BA, CNP, RYT presents live from her kitchen—as you follow along in yours—how to ferment “Dilly Kraut” and take an in-depth look at the deeply therapeutic benefits of fermented foods. While fermentation has gained in popularity over the years, there are many misconceptions about how they impact our microbiomes and are used to improve health. Knowing which type of ferment, would benefit which type of condition, is essential to recommending them successfully in clinical practice. Moreover, store-bought commercial versions are often misleading and lack the health benefits of those that are traditionally made.

Therapeutic Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

In this lecture, Jacqueline Steinert explores the ketogenic diet and the therapeutic benefits it yields. Consuming fewer food groups along with higher fat and protein foods results in feeling less hungry. It also results in a longer digestion time that ultimately supports weight loss. Besides weight loss, the keto diet more importantly has been effectively used to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in children and mitigate symptoms with progressive neurological disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Since the keto diet reduces blood sugar, it can lower the risk of insulin complications and even supplement certain cancer treatments. Heart health (and cholesterol), as well as hormonal disorders such as PCOS, have also benefited from a ketogenic diet. Lastly, endurance athletes and bodybuilders also utilize the keto diet to trim fat in rapid time frames. By consuming healthful fats and sufficient proteins such as nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, grass-fed meats, and fatty fish, the body witnesses a wide array of therapeutic benefits from the ketogenic diet!
Faculty Feature | Jamie-Lynn Shaw

Nutrition & Health: The Fundamentals provides a framework of the basics of nutrition which gets built upon in each course following. The students leave this course with a strong foundation and understanding of micronutrients, macronutrients, metabolism, digestion, absorption, and energy balance. An essential takeaway from this course is the importance of a strong, healthy digestive system. Like Hippocrates said, ‘all disease begins in the gut.’”

We asked Jamie-Lynn what she loves about IHN and teaching her courses:

Nutrition & Health: The Fundamentals is typically the first course students take when starting out at IHN. While I was a student, it was during this course that I realized I was exactly where I needed to be and my excitement surrounding the program increased. Out of the four courses I teach at IHN, Fundamentals is the course where I see students realize they are surrounded by a group of like-minded people, light up about the future, and fall in love with the program.”

“I love being surrounded by like-minded people, both the faculty and students are there to not only better their health but also help others reach an optimal level of health. What brought people to IHN is such a vast array of reasons but everyone has the same goal and overall beliefs that nutrition is the foundation of health and vitality. I love the tight-knit community that has been created at IHN and the happiness and excitement that comes from being on campus.”

Teaching at IHN since 2018

Mood-Boosting Benefits Of Chromotherapy

As colour surrounds us everywhere, we unintentionally associate certain feelings and experiences with each one. Toronto Chiropractor, Dr. Claudia Machiella, shares in a May 2 2019 “How Colour Can Change Our Lives” Vitalize Magazine article (3 minute read), that the more we learn about Colour Therapy and how it affects our thinking, mood, and emotions, the more we can use it to improve our lives, energy and health. Machiella says, “The theory behind colour therapy is that colour is light of different wavelengths and frequencies.  Every single cell in our body needs light energy and once absorbed, it affects us physically, emotionally and spiritually.”

These humble bulbs are often an overlooked vegetable. Onions may make your eyes water but they are what give a dish its unmistakable flavour. The onion is a member of the Allium family, related to garlic, scallion, shallot, leek and chives. Onions are a source of Quercetin, a flavonoid that supports heart health as well as protecting the body from oxidative stress. Quercetin improves blood pressure, works to neutralize free radicals in the body, and has even demonstrated antihistamine effects. Give onions some love with this Caramelized Onion & Garlic Smoked Salmon Frittata recipe by IHN graduate Caitlin Iles.
