Senior Spotlight: Bryanna Toohey
An Article by Staff Member John Croteau
|
|
Bryanna Toohey is a well mannered, positive, graceful, unassuming and engaged student here at Sanborn Regional High School. Besides being totally engaged in her academics, Bryanna is also fully engaged in dance. Bryanna looks forward to dance more than most things, probably because she’s been dancing since she was 2 years old! Although these days, with the many restrictions that the pandemic has brought to the performing arts, it has been both a release and a stress at the same time. I have known Bryanna since 2016, when she was a delightful student in my 8th grade social studies class. She has always been a quiet force in all of her classes as many of her teachers will attest. One of her favorite classes she’s taken at SRHS was psychology, which may be a path for her in college. Bryanna is also a member of the Spanish National Honor Society! Asombrosa!! She and I have had many conversations over the last few years about a wide range of topics which we share an interest including the importance of the arts in our lives, as well as just being good humans- Bryanna is one of the best! She is funny, that dry, witty, makes you think kind of humor so she and I have been at one another since 8th grade! She has recently been putting much effort into the college acceptance front where she has been quite successful. Wherever Bryanna goes she will brighten the lives of those around her just as she has done for me and all those she has come to know here in our lovely Sanborn community! Good luck Bryanna and you’re going to do great things!!!

Senior Spotlight: Jamie Warren
An Article by Staff Member John Croteau
|
|
Jamie Warren is a friendly, kind and easygoing student that encompasses a relatively silent but important part of our Sanborn community. Jamie is a hard working young lady who follows the adage of work hard and play hard. Jamie loves to have fun. She has a creative and carefree soul that is infectious to all she meets. Some of her favorite classes that she has attended here at SRHS include woodworking and art, both classes that allow her to express her creativity! Jamie, like most artists, thinks her work is not as good as she would like, but her passion and creativity shines through in all she does. She is also proud of her growth in math since freshman year, she attributes this to her teachers here at Sanborn. When Jamie is not working, she loves hanging with friends, listening to music and driving around the roads of our community- she especially likes combining all of these activities together! Her infectious smile and demeanor make her easy to be around . She also likes playing softball, shopping and eating pasta- with sauce of course! Jamie wants to continue her carefree, free spirited adventures when she graduates. She plans on going to college for real estate, or traveling first, possibly down south where she could adopt a monkey! If you've been graced with Jamie’s presence, you will understand how important all of our students here at Sanborn are!

Senior Spotlight: Adam LaPanne
An Article by Staff Member Josh White
|
|
I have known Adam for nearly four years now, although I had to be reminded that freshman Adam and Senior Adam were the same people -- allow me to explain. During Adam’s Sophomore year, he lost nearly 70 pounds and looked like a completely different person, but his personality and contagious smile remained the same.
After Adam’s incredible fitness journey, he decided to try out for the football team. As his football coach, I really got to know Adam as a person. I was impressed by Adam’s determination to learn a game that he was so new to. Adam quickly, not only secured a spot on the team, but earned a starting role on the varsity defense.
Adam is a great athlete, but also a member of both Best Buddies and NHS. Fellow teachers echoed similar praise for Adam. Mr. Cass noted that “Adam LaPanne has always impressed me with his work ethic and thoughtful approach to life.” Ms. Black also shared that “Adam is a natural leader! He is always willing to offer a helping hand and inspires his peers to do the same. I can't wait to see where his path takes him!”
I can honestly say that the more I get to know Adam, the more my respect grows for him.
Adam plans to go to medical school to pursue a career in Anesthesiology after he leaves SRHS.
Whatever he decides to do, we know that he will accomplish great things!

Senior Spotlight: RJ Kostan
An Article by Staff Member Bari Boisvert
|
|
We live in a time where kindness truly matters. I know that must sound trite, but I truly believe that in order to be successful in life one must be successful in navigating through the obstacles that we face with grace and kindness. Robert (RJ) Kostan is someone who has definitely done this during his years as Sanborn Regional High School.
I have known RJ since his very first day of high school when he signed up for my History of Rock and Roll English elective. While he loved the subject matter and enjoyed listening to the music that accompanied the class, he also took the academic component very seriously. It was definitely great training for him because he was then in my English class Sophomore year. He took the skills he learned Freshman year and worked hard in this class.
During RJ’s Junior year, he ran for class representative in Student Council, for which I am the advisor, and continued to serve on the council his senior year. RJ worked tirelessly in participating in all that is the Student Council. He volunteered to take on chairmen roles in various initiatives and was an integral part of our Kindness Matters Week, which came to him naturally. RJ is kind, a hard worker, and a student with high integrity. These traits matter and in a world where sometimes these traits are hard to come by, it makes me feel optimistic that young people like RJ are out there ready to make their mark on the world.
RJ is very well liked among his peers. This year he is working remotely from home, and every time he logs into Student Council and appears on the screen in my room, all of his friends chant his name and also call out their goodbyes at the end of their meeting. This is a true testament to what a great person he is.
Math teacher, Mrs. Ann Black said of RJ, “I was so happy to have RJ for two years in a row. He has a great sense of humor and a contagious smile!.”
RJ is currently sending out applications to colleges and is working hard to make the last few months at Sanborn his best. Good luck RJ! Wherever you decide to go, please bring that optimism and kindness with you!

A Message From the Superintendent
|
|
Dear Families,
March 13 marked one year since we moved all our students to full remote learning. It is hard to believe that a full year has passed, but as more adults become vaccinated, we know that a return to normalcy is on the horizon. Part of that normalcy is having all of our students back to school, and as we discussed this past winter, it’s time for us to reassess our instructional model.
Vaccinations are one important milestone to return to normal. Last week, a large portion of our staff had their first dose, with their second dose to be administered on April 7th. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NH Department of Public Health (NHDPH) guidance, individuals must wait an additional two weeks after their second dose of the vaccine to reach maximum immunity.
With that in mind, following our plan to reassess our learning model, and pending a School Board vote on April 7th, administration is recommending that we move to a modified version Tier 2 of our COVID Instructional Plan (based on the data) when we return from April Vacation on May 3, 2021. Tier 2 is outlined in the plan on page 10, and some highlights are below.
|
|
We are expecting school to be fully in-person with no remote option in the Fall of 2021. To prepare our students for this format, we have asked all of our remote students to return to school in person on May 3, 2021. We sent our remote students a letter similar to this one earlier in the week. We ask that any family who has a remote student with extenuating medical circumstances regarding a return to school on May 3rd to please contact their child's building principal by Monday, March 29.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing all our students in school soon!

Honors Biology Welcomes Guest Speaker
Thank you to Rockingham County Forester Greg Jordan for Joining Us!
|
|
On Thursday, March 25th, Sanborn Regional High School Honors Biology sophomores welcomed Rockingham County Forester, Greg Jordan, via zoom. Mr. Jordan’s silviculture work is based out of UNH. He joined our class to discuss student concerns with loss of forested land due to development (the urban sprawl) and for students to gain more information about invasive species in our forests (plants, insects, and fungi). There was also a history lesson built in about the changes in the forested landscape of New Hampshire.
|
|
The students have been working in small groups since December to come up with Ecological Action Plans to implement in the school and local communities this Spring. Some of them needed insight on our local forests to help with their plans. All of us benefited from this experience!
“I thought the most interesting thing I learned was that from the 1600's to the mid 1800's deforestation was higher and the forested acreage of the area was down by about 1 million acres. I thought that with more modern technology and a greater demand, the late 1900's to early 2000's would show a sharp decline in forested acreage, but it has actually gone up since the 1800's. That to me was very interesting.” - Kyle B.
“I was intrigued by the information Mr. Jordan presented us with! You could clearly tell he
was fond of his work and knew what he was talking about. Something that I found really interesting, that Mr. Jordan shared with us, is that deforestation is not happening in New Hampshire as a result of overharvesting, but instead by too much land being taken up in certain areas by buildings, stores, restaurants, etc.” -Olivia D.
“I found it very helpful to meet with Mr. Jordan, and I learned a lot! What I learned that was the most surprising, or shocking to me was about the Emerald Ash Borer, (I think that's what he said) and how he showed us the side-by-side comparison of a neighborhood in Ohio, I believe it was, just a few years apart. When showing this, he said, "if you haven't seen or heard of this yet, it won't be long before you do." This worried me a bit, and really opened my eyes!” - Kate L.
“I actually found it pretty interesting, even though I didn’t get too much insight on how it can help my group’s project, but I thought it was pretty cool. I liked learning about the stone walls a little bit because I see them everywhere in the woods around here.” - Riana O.
“Mr. Jordan had lots of helpful information to share. I was glad to be able to ask him questions.” -Erica S.

Signs of Suicide Program Update
|
|
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Starting Monday, March 29th students in the Freshman Class will be participating in the SOS Signs of Suicide prevention program. This program is run annually with the Freshman Class as a way for the school counselors to connect with students their first year of high school and talk about what to do if they are concerned about themselves or someone else, and identify who their supports are to help.
Our goals in participating in this program are:
- To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression or potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
- To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
If you haven’t already, please review and complete the consent form below regarding your student’s participation. We strongly believe that all students should participate in this informational program. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the program please reach out to your student’s counselor.
Thank you,
Amanda Feeney, Student Assistance Counselor

Dear parents & guardians of the class of 2021,
Graduation is just a few months away and what better way to celebrate than acknowledging your senior! The class is hosting a fundraiser selling yard signs. Many of you saw the signs last spring from the class of 2020 and we were excited to have the same opportunity for our graduates as well! I have attached a flier to this email for you to share with family and friends.
Please see the link and details for order below:
- All orders and payments can be made here: https://www.highpointgifts.com/SRHS2021
- For the signs, the senior portrait is uploaded in the "Add to Cart" step, selected from the user's computer. A high quality image is required to produce a high quality sign, in general a cell phone picture taken of a photograph of a senior will not produce a good result. High Point will double check with the purchaser to be sure that they do in fact want to use a sub-standard photograph.
- Each sign is $25.00, tumblers are also for sale for $20.00
- Our order window is NOW through May 14th
- Orders will be available for pick-up at Sanborn Regional High school- with an estimated pick-up date of June 2nd*

PTO Clothing & Shoe Donation Bins
|
|
When you drop your unwanted clothing and shoes off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students. NOTE: Shoes must go in a separate bin.
Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
