Spring Art Show Judges
Meet our three reputable 2021 Judges for GALA’s Annual Spring Art Show

Maryann Mullett is an award-winning artist in pastels, capturing the beauty of still lives, vegetables and animals. “Inspiration comes to me from nature, studying close-up views and how shapes and colors interact to form strong compositions. By applying a calculated crop, farmer's market vegetables create their own still life, boasting their glossy surfaces and textures in mysterious cracks and craters. Luminous colors dance in light and shadow. Wild animals in their natural habitat and domestic animals going about their daily routines are constant subjects for my paintings. I am honored to have earned Master Pastelist with PSA (Pastel Society of America) as well as Master Circle with IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies). I serve as President for the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and Vice President for the Central Mass Pastel Society.”

Yvonne Hemingway has been working in watercolors for the past 30 years,
capturing the beauty of nature with her award-winning paintings of florals, birds and landscapes. “One of my goals is to say more with a painting than can be said with a photograph. I want the viewer to feel the essence of the local atmosphere and quality of light as it interacts with the subject. Spending more time painting outdoors from life has been another goal that allows me to see and feel color so much more accurately and to convey that feeling through my painting. I love working with watercolors because of its spontaneous nature and the quality of transparency and light that can be achieved with water and pigment. My paintings have recently been juried into shows with the New England Watercolor Society, Bennington Center for the Arts, and exhibited at Gallery Twist in Lexington, MA.”

Lisa Nugent is an award-winning artist with a lifelong appreciation of art, both natural and man-made. “My current medium of choice is soft pastels. Their immediacy, attainable depth and control, to me are unparalleled. The subject matter I am most passionate about is Wildlife and Animals. My style is traditional realism. Through my work I strive to provide the viewer an unbiased, firsthand experience. I also relish the challenges that replication without bias brings. I am a juried member of both the Pastel Society of America and the International Guild of Realism and have received multiple awards through various organizations and shows. In 2019 I cofounded the Central Mass Pastel Society (CMPS is an IAPS member society). CMPS’s juried shows see International participation. As the President of CMPS, I am constantly exposed to a wide variety of artistic expression. For me, it is always exciting to see new perspectives and techniques. This is especially so in the case of shows like the GALA Annual Spring Show, which boasts such a fantastic and diverse array of mediums and approaches. I look forward to this assignment and wish all the participants the best of luck. “
