SIGNS OF SPRING
It’s almost April and surprisingly for the Lake Sunapee region, signs of spring have appeared virtually overnight. Ice is out; there are hints of green with crocuses and daffodil shoots popping up. Between wind storms, it’s quiet and serene. Now that the days are longer, early evening walkers and photographers are enjoying the magical hour when the light is gold and the shadows long. Fingers crossed… Could the snowstorms of winter really be over?
This Easter may have special meaning, offering many of us the promise of celebrating again… or hopefully very soon, with family and friends, bringing joyful traditions back to Springtime, now that COVID vaccine is widely available. Reminder: CDC still urges us to be cautious, continue to wear a mask and socially distance.

ABBOTT LIBRARY PRESENTS
ARTIST OF THE WEEK
This week’s ‘artist’ specializes in the art of historical literature. The Historical Society is proud to announce that historical researcher & architect, Barbara Chalmers’ has published the remarkable "History of Sunapee” Volumes 1 & 2.
These books trace Sunapee’s history through its buildings and places from 1768 when England’s King George granted land to present times, and tell then and now stories of the people who lived, worked, owned, and died in them. An intricate web of family ties emerges through the history of the town’s land, shaped by economic forces that moved farmers from outlying areas into four villages that formed around grist and sawmills. These same forces then brought thousands of visitors to our beautiful lake. Together these stories form a fascinating glimpse of how our village centers were created and lake colony established. Nearly all of the 240 sites featured in these two volumes exist today in some form. Historic and iconic sites include homes, cottages, farms, schools, mills, quarries, stores, post offices, boarding houses, hotels, tourist cabins, dance halls, restaurants, parks, infrastructure, and cemeteries. More than 3,000 people, organizations, and places are discussed in these books and can be found in a combined Volume One and Two index. Each Volume, with more than 240 pages, includes 400+ historical and current maps, photographs, and other images. A third and final volume with another 130 sites will be available by the end of 2021. For a complete listing of sites included these volumes, see our website at www.sunapeehistoricalsociety.org

These books may be ordered now for $48 each and will be available in April for pickup or shipping. For a copy, contact the Sunapee Historical Society at 763-9872 or sunapeehistory@gmail.com

WELLNESS TIP
CELEBRATE
Let’s celebrate the people who helped get us thru the pandemic year… a huge “Thank You” to the restaurants, stores and libraries who adapted their routines to provide us all with take-out dinners and curbside pick-up books and other essentials;  the grocery store clerks who kept the shelves stocked, the musicians and artists who went ‘virtual' to entertain us, and the myriads of health care workers, who risked their lives to preserve ours.  …and all the strangers who made our day feel better by a nod and a greeting as we passed by. (Surely we were both smiling behind a mask.)
Sharing this heart warming tale of music shared thru an apartment wall, that bonded two strangers.
