Project Annoucement: eCampus Ontario Funds the Creation of a Public Health Nursing Virtual Simulation Series

The BScN program at McMaster University, the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), and the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators using Simulation (CAN-Sim) are collaborating to create a series of virtual simulation games (VSGs) on public health nursing. The simulations, which will be freely available and accessible in both French and English, will take nursing students through three scenarios focused on community assessment, health promotion approaches, and program planning and evaluation.

Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education Survey Report

In the fall of 2020, the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) conducted a survey on the use of virtual simulation in Canadian schools of nursing.

The Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education Survey Report provides nurse educators with a snapshot of the use of virtual simulation in Canadian schools of nursing six months after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis and discussion provided describe considerations to optimize the use of virtual simulation alongside classroom, in-person simulation, and clinical placements.

Nursing the Future

Happy Summer! Hopefully you will soon be enjoying some time away from your regular Zoom schedule, finding ways to recharge from this gruelling year. With times as they are, Nursing the FutureTM continues to launch strategies for the purpose of increasing student success as they enter professional practice for the first time. One key NTF strategy focuses on growing the leadership capacity of newly graduated nurses. We know that these are student skills that have been recognized by faculty, and built on throughout their education. As these new professionals engage with their communities, NTF wants to capture, nurture and advance their leadership capacity. The first strategy of The Greenhouse (Building Capacity: The Road to Leadership) aims to expose new nurses to the multitude of pathways to leadership and offer them opportunities to engage one-on-one with senior nurse leaders. The first online session of this strategy features Dr. Netha Dyck and will occur May 27th, 2021 4-5 PST (see https://nursingthefuture.ca/greenhouse/ or register at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/152924337811).

The 2nd Greenhouse strategy is entitled Leaning In: Master Classes with Nursing Leaders. This strategy features interviews with established nursing leaders on research, innovation and grassroots initiatives that focus on nursing knowledge translation, application and dissemination, as well as professional mentorship and leadership skill-building. NTF subscribers can look forward to the inaugural series launching Fall 2021: Entering The Sacred Circle – Nursing’s Covenant With Humanity with Dr. Jean Watson. Rounding out The Greenhouse strategies will be The Incubator: A Nursing Leadership Capacity Building Institute where NTF will address the evolving leadership needs of new (<1 year practice) and recently graduated (1-3 years practice) nurses. Recognizing the early career trajectories of these professionals, Institutes will focus on preparing graduates for advanced practice roles such as taking unit charge or supervisory positions, exploring clinical research opportunities and engaging in post-graduate certification programs or graduate level education. You can look forward to the inaugural NTF Leadership Institute for New Graduates as a PRE-CONFERENCE workshop for our 10th Workplace Integration of New Nurses (WINN) Nursing The Future (NTF) Conference to be held in Vancouver August 2022.

Concluding this thread of celebrating leaders, NTF is pleased to announce the WINNERS of the 2021 Torch Award – Lia Sanzone and the 2021 New Graduate Excellence Award Kirstie Grimard! Visit https://nursingthefuture.ca/awards/ for more information on our winners!
