PENTECOST & BAPTISM
ON MAY 23
A JOYFUL CELEBRATION!
"When the day of Pentecost had come, [the disciples] were all gathered in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house..Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. [They] were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." (Acts 2)
Last Sunday's celebration of Pentecost was joyful and colorful, as the church and parishioners all were decked out in the bright red color of this season, symbolizing the the fire of the Holy Spirit coming to rest on us, as it did on the first disciples. We celebrated the baptism of Wyatt Goheen, who answered the question, "Do you desired to be baptized?" with a resounding, "I do!" The congregation responded in kind to their question, "Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this person in his new life in Christ?" "We will!" they said.
Many voices participated in our celebration. Six people read the first lesson and psalm in their own first languages: Rosemary Domecki in Polish, Chandi Hinrichs and Rick Fung, pictured above, in Hindi and Cantonese, Louisa LeRoux in Afrikaans, Leah Condello in Tagalog, and Tusi Mayer, whose mother's Bible is pictured below, in Samoan.
Our choir added to the celebration by working with the to produce three pieces appropriate for the occasion, concluding with a beautiful rendition of the Hawaiian hymn, "'O 'Oe 'Io" ("You are God"). See the article, below, for a bio of our talented music director, Chris Suzuki.
Thank you to everyone who helped make such a joyful and fitting Pentecost liturgy. As Ignatius of Loyola encouraged, "Now, let us go & set the world on Fire"!
WHO'S BEHIND THE MUSIC STAND?
OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR, CHRIS SUZUKI!
Chris Suzuki, our Choir Director, is a kamaaina who attended Lanakila Baptist High School in Ewa, UH-Hilo and UH-Mānoa. He earned his degree in musical composition. He used to sing in the St. Andrew’s Cathedral choir and it was there for Malcolm Chun’s funeral, that he met Kathy Otani and Chandi Hinrichs during the reception. That was how he learned Holy Nativity was looking for a choir director: the rest is history!
Chris has been a member of the Oahu Choral Society, an elite choral group that performs with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. He is also the founder, director, and arranger of the Hitbox Music Ensemble, a chamber ensemble of 10-20 musicians, which performs video game music, a genre in its own right. Chris regards this music as a new art form which is entering mainstream media and is having relevance in today’s music and culture.
It was after experiencing The Symphony of the Goddesses, a live touring orchestral production from the video game series, Legend of Zelda, that he started his video game music group. Chris first saw and heard this performance of video game music in an orchestral concert setting in San Francisco. He was thrilled when this same production was brought here to Hawaii a few years later with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Oahu Choral Society. It was after experiencing this show as a concertgoer and a performer that Chris decided to form Hitbox to perform video game music for Hawaii audiences, collaborating with local musicians. The group performs live at local anime and comic conventions, and other live venues, and their performances have been uploaded to YouTube and other social media sites. What a thrill!
Chris feels blessed to have a variety of musical skills. From college onward, he has been both an instrumentalist and a singer. He composes and arranges for both forms of expression. His work requires many hours of working alone as well as rehearsing and performing with musicians. He sustains himself with his favorite foods: ramen, pizza, and burgers!
