Halo Headlines w/ Clouds

NOVEMBER 2022

Greetings Tony,

How silently they tumble down

And come to rest upon the ground

To lay a carpet, rich and rare,

Beneath the trees without a care,

Content to sleep, their work well done,

Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly

Until they nearly reach the sky.

Twisting, turning through the air

Till all the trees stand stark and bare.

Exhausted, drop to earth below

To wait, like children, for the snow.

~ Elsie N. Brady, Leaves

Kitchen Angels active volunteers are invited to a very special Volunteer Appreciation event at La Fonda Hotel, in their La Terraza Room. The event will be Friday, November 18th from 6 until 9 pm. Dinner will be catered, there will be live music, and we will distribute service anniversary awards as well as awards for exceptional volunteers.

Please RSVP to Lauren no later than Monday, November 7th. Let us know if you are a vegetarian so we can account for your meal preference. Space is limited, so we are inviting volunteers only - no spouses this time. We look forward to celebrating our volunteers and all you do for our community.

We recently held our fourth and final 30 Year Anniversary cooking class here at Kitchen Angels. It was a sold out event. Chef Ahmed Obo of Jambo cooked up an African meal extravaganza. Participants made Jamaican Curried Pumpkin Bisque, Birdseye Seafood Stew, Black Rice Pudding and Roti – African bread similar to Indian naan.

We're tremendously grateful for the generosity of our guest chefs and look forward to doing something similar in the future.

"I'm over the moon with the food I've been getting. Thank you all so much for this god-send." ~ Katherine L.

“Thank you for the snack bag you sent out. The seaweed and crackers – wow! Oh my goodness – so good. I couldn’t stop eating the seaweed – unbelievable.”   ~Sophie L.

Tasty Tidbits

Although most people think of spring and summer as the fresh produce and garden seasons, it would be foolish to overlook the abundance of fall. Fruits like apples, clementines, cranberries, and figs are all in season plus vegetables like Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, squash, and sweet potatoes are all available. Although we can eat these foods any time of the year, eating ingredients at their peak seasonal freshness just feels good. So here are thirty recipes for the thirty days of November from Tasty.com. There are desserts like apple and cinnamon tray cake, pumpkin coconut chocolate chip muffins, and mini pecan butter apple tarts (shaped like delicate roses). Then there are the hearty meals like creamy pumpkin casserole, salmon with spaghetti squash, and slow cooker ragu. These are the kinds of recipes that will get anyone through the cooler weather as we steadily move into winter.

One of the other recipes from this list is a faux-tisserie chicken, or a rotisserie-style chicken made in your own oven. Coated with spices and olive oil, the chicken is roasted low and slow until the meat is succulent and tender. And really, nothing says cozy homemade meal like roasted chicken. Here is a simple roast chicken from Thomas Keller and here is one from Ina Garten. Remember to use those chicken leftovers throughout the week for other meals and chicken stock.

Continuing Education

As the days get shorter and colder, one way to take advantage of the remaining nice days is to tend our fall/winter garden. Although the growing season is over for most of New Mexico, there are still plenty of things we can do to scratch that garden itch. For one, you can use the leaves from the elm trees and the cottonwoods to add nutrients to your garden through composting, mowing them into your lawn, or making leaf mold. You can also use leaves to protect your root vegetables and cold hardy crops like beets, leeks, and kale. The amount of leaves you need to insulate your garden will depend on where you live and what kinds of plants you want to protect.

You can also add the leaves to your compost bin as long as you continue to add green matter as well. Generally, it is best to collect the fall leaves, shred them, and add them to the compost bin throughout the year. Additionally, since a lot of New Mexicans have wood burning stoves or fireplaces, go light on the wood ash in your compost pile. Wood ash can affect the acidity of the entire compost pile.

Community Connections...

Once again, we are so grateful for the guest chefs who participated in our 30 Year Anniversary Quarterly Cooking Classes. All four events sold out quickly. The food was delicious and the participants had a wonderful time.

Chef Johnny Vee works at Las Cosas Cooking School.

Chef David Sundberg is the Program Development Director at Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute.

Ahmed Obo is the owner and chef at Jambo Café.

Anita Hausafus is an extraordinary cook who taught our east Indian cuisine class.

We know time is precious and we're grateful these chefs took time out of their busy schedules to showcase their cooking skills for friends of Kitchen Angels.

Thank you, Jeanette...

As many of you know, Jeanette Iskat left Kitchen Angels to work as a counselor for the 988 crisis line for mental health counseling. Jeanette had been with Kitchen Angels for nearly seven years and helped more than 1,500 clients begin service. Over half of those clients came onto service during the pandemic!

Jeanette regularly went above and beyond her job description, offering clients resources pulled from her vast knowledge of local and state-wide sources. She helped build up the Santa Fe Connect UniteUs platform by entering 523 clients into the system that facilitates services to eligible clients across many different social service organizations.

Staff, clients and volunteers all appreciated Jeanette's hard work and dedication to the mission of Kitchen Angels. All of us wish her the best of luck in her new position.

Thank you, Jeanette!
