The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences selected Brenda Goh as its Spring 2021 student marshal. Goh, an Honors student from Singapore, completed her degree with a double major in political science and psychology, and a minor in health promotion.
During her time at Iowa State, Goh embraced her role as a student leader. She also excelled in undergraduate research. She completed her Honors project, "Predictors of Offender Treatment Attrition in the Iowa Domestic Abuse Program," under the advisement of Amie Zarling, associate professor of human development and family studies.

On Wednesday, April 7, the Iowa State University Alumni Association hosted its 89th Annual Honors & Awards Celebration. We'd like to recognize and congratulate the five 2020 distinguished awardees who are graduates of the University Honors Program.

Rod Kruse

Rod Kruse heads the Des Moines office of BNIM Architects and is winning accolades for design excellence. His portfolio includes more than 110 higher education projects and studies on 14 campuses, including Iowa State University’s Troxel Hall.

Edward Maginn

Edward Maginn is the Keough-Hesburgh Professor in the University of Notre Dame Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He has demonstrated success in both research innovation and inspiring the next generation of chemical engineers.

Lynette Hornung

Lynette Hornung serves as the Microsoft security architect with Catapult Systems, an IT consulting services firm. She is considered one of the top subject matter experts on issues regarding enterprise security architecture and data security and privacy solutions.

Justin Hines

Justin Hines is an associate professor of chemistry at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching multiple courses in chemistry and biochemistry, he runs a federally funded undergraduate research laboratory.

Nicole Hashemi
Associate professor of mechanical engineering Nicole Hashemi has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Hashemi is a champion of undergraduate research at Iowa State and routinely participates in the First-Year Honors Mentor Program as a faculty mentor.

Kevin Schalinske
Kevin Schalinske, professor of food science and human nutrition, has been elected to a new leadership role with the American Society for Nutrition. He will serve a four-year term that includes one-year stints as vice president and president. Schalinske has served for many years as the College of Human Sciences faculty liaison to the University Honors Committee.

The University Honors Committee and the Honors Student Board invite you to the Spring 2021 Honors Virtual Poster Session. The online platform features the capstone research projects of 109 Honors students.
The virtual poster session is organized by college, based on the student's major. Each participating student has provided a project abstract, research poster, and a 5-minute recorded presentation.

Stefan Peng ('21 computer engineering) received two Honors Program awards, the University Honors Program Grant and the Stewart Research Award, in support of his senior Honors project.
Peng's educational pathway exemplifies the breadth and depth of an Honors education. He began his college career as a chemical engineering student, later switching to computer engineering. He chose minors in Chinese and chemistry. Peng has also taken a wide variety of classes outside his major, including financial accounting and a seminar on medieval literature. His undergraduate research and Honors project, Differentiation of Neural Stem Cells through Electric Field Stimulation, was supervised by Donald Sakaguchi, Morrill Professor of genetics, development & cell biology.
