Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

We asked and you generously answered our call for stories.

Here is our very first and it tells of Ole and his wrist warmers:

My aunt Helga gave me these years ago. They belonged to her father-in-law, my stepfather’s father, Ole. He died in 1929 and his two sons are also deceased, but my cousin Susan and I recently pieced the story together from what little we know.

Ole was illegitimate and had no future in Norway in the late 1880s. We think his mother made them for him when he left Norway for the US. We also think the initials are his name, Ole Johnson (or the Norwegian equivalent) Severin (which was my uncle Leon’s middle name.)

My rudimentary google skills told me that “erindring” means remember in Norwegian.

Winter 2022 KAL hosted by Tam via Zoom - Birkin by Caitlin Hunter
Birkin by Caitlin Hunter (Boyland Knitworks)

Take a mental break from the cold of February & March and join us for the Birkin Knit Along.

The beautiful floral pattern is perfect to work on while you’re craving those spring flowers.

The Birkin Sweater is a stranded colorwork piece, knit from the top down with a comfortable fit. This popular pattern was re-designed last year for a looser fit and now includes a larger size range. Check the Ravelry project page for color inspiration!
Options:
  • Work all the yoke detail or fewer floral rows if you don’t want a deep yoke.
  • Work the body in an A-line shape as designed or a straight shape.
  • Knit in 2 colors (Main Color & 1 contrast color) OR 5 colors (Main Color & 4 Contrast Colors).

Skills Required:
Knit, Purl, Cast on, Bind off, Short Rows, & Stranded Colorwork with Charts

Please NOTE: This is a KAL, not a class. You need to be an independent knitter able to fix your mistakes.

All yarn must be purchased from the Blue Purl to join our KAL.

When: Tuesdays, 7-8pm via Zoom, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 2/22, 3/1, 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29

Please register (call or email us) soon to reserve your spot & allow time to order yarn if needed!  If you’ve done Tam’s KALs before,

New, New-ish Kits...
Fold & Sew Shrug
Check out our Fold and Sew Shrug in Hikoo's Kenzie, a wonderful mix of silk, alpaca, angora, nylon and New Zealand merino. Lovely texture and a clever (yet simple) origami-type fold and seam result in this elegant go-to piece sure to become a wardrobe staple. Churchmouse Easy Fold Poncho
Want a great tv watching project? Well, CM's Easy Fold Poncho, pattern available on Ravelry, fits the bill. We've reimagined possibilities for you, including our in-shop and online kit using Hikoo's Kenzie. We also think the poncho would be nice in Rowan Felted Tweed, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, or Noro Ito. A toasty lap WIP. Just sayin'....
EasyPeasy Bandana
We have both the EASYPEASY Bandana in Rowan Alpaca DK (shop sample is DONE) or Rowan Softyak DK in the shop and online. Use either Susanna Muller's needle suggestion for a smaller version or Y's for a larger one.
Brooklyn Tweed - Peerie
Brooklyn Tweed's Peerie, a fingering weight yarn (we have sweater quantities!), just begs to be made up. See our idea-filled ravelry bundle. We also love the Alaska hat by Camille Descoteaux made in Peerie and a Freia Minikin (Minikins available in shop only. Stop by or call).
Love & Light
One of our talented customers, Cindy dropped by the shop to show us a darling heart (above) knit up using a string of lights.

The pattern, Love and Light was designed by her friend, Jen Hohenboken (Instagram name @jennilee44), who partnered with designer Laura Nelkin to get the pattern written and distributed on Ravelry.

Pattern proceeds will go to All Hands and Hearts! which addresses the immediate and long-term needs of global communities impacted by disasters. They are known for how well they harness the strength of local communities, to re-rebuild safer more resilient infrastructure.

"We are all fundraisers for Walk MS and we represent the entire Northeast. We will wear them day of events (Spring) as well as when we gather virtually for celebrations of our Walk MS participants!"

The Val Cowl plus
BEFORE & AFTER… Anne was able to get a little “me time” to knit a VAL Cowl for herself after knitting hats for the whole family during the holidays! Using Woolfolk Far and Sno held together this double layered cowl designed by Antonia Shankland is seriously luxurious, cushy, and warm. Perfect timing for this weather!! Anne did a wonderful job and her Morning Walk Hat is perfect too!

There’s a VAL and a Morning Walk sample in the shop, if you want to check it out. Come visit :) Know that once you touch it though, you’re gonna want to make it!
And finally...
Snapped this photo at Lincoln Center where W caught La Boheme at the Met recently. (Tip to everyone: always have the ball gown at the ready.) After extensive research, our Consultant noted that, indeed, it is a clapping hat with a pull cord to move the hands - the perfect wintertime accessory for extended encore calls at the opera. Goodbye, opera gloves...hello, clapping mittens! Pairs nicely with a ball gown or tuxedo.)
