Greetings. I can't believe it is February already, but here we are. We are hard at work at and around the SLA office. The 2021 conference planning is well underway and I am excited to see what our joint conference with Manitoba will offer. We are already thinking about and working towards the SLA AGM, which will be held in May, so please keep an eye out for more information.
I am also very excited that we were able to transition the OBOP event to a virtual format. Author readings, the launch event hosted by our Patron the Honourable Russ Mirasty at Government House and discussion sessions are all being filmed. These videos which will

be available to libraries are in addition to the events hosted at libraries. It was a great pleasure and privilege  for me to have been able to represent SLA at the recent filming of the launch event at Government House. It was very different than any other year, but I was happy that we could still find a way to make it work so that we can launch OBOP month in style.

It has been an eventful week for OBOP.
The launch event at Government House, scheduled for February 25 has had to change and be rescheduled. Instead of an in person event, we have videotaped all the components and our video recorder, Em Ironstar will splice the pieces together. By the time we are finished there will be one coherent video with readings by Paul Seesequasis, author of Blanket Toss Under Midnight Sun. As well, the video will include a performance by Bradley Bellegarde (InfoRediculous), as well as remarks byas well as remarks by our Honorary Patron, His Honour, Russ Mirasty.
On January 26, we filmed 4 short readings with Paul, and once edited, will be made available to libraries across the province during the four weeks in March. Lastly, four moderated zoom panel discussions will be made available in March.
There's a lot to look forward to in March!

I READ CANADIAN DAY is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people. This is a day dedicated to 'reading Canadian' and will empower families, schools, libraries and organizations to host local activities and events within the week.
For example, libraries or book stores can create a local I Read Canadian display for a month, or host author and illustrator visits during the week of the I Read Canadian day. Schools or communities can create challenges to get more readers involved - see how many readers can read Canadian.
GOAL: The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of Canadian books and celebrate the richness, diversity and breadth of Canadian literature.
ACTION: We challenge the nation to "Read Canadian" for 15 minutes and to share their experience at their library, in their school, with their families and friends, or on social media Young people are encouraged to read, or be read to, a Canadian book of their choice.

Visible Minority Librarians in Canada Survey

The Visible Minority Librarians of Canada (ViMLoC) Network conducted a comprehensive survey on visible minority librarians in 2013. The Network would like to conduct this survey again to examine the changes in the library landscape regarding visible minority librarians in various librarian positions, including leadership. This survey will help ViMLoC identify visible minority librarians' needs and propose projects to empower them in their current positions or their future career development, such as mentorship programming, leadership training, and networking opportunities.
This project has been approved on ethical grounds by Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of British Columbia. A detailed Informed Consent Form is included at the start of the survey for your review. It may take about 20 minutes to complete the questionnaire. We will appreciate it very much if you can fill it out by February 28, 2021. All questions are optional; all responses will be kept confidential and anonymous. If you have any questions about this survey, please feel free to contact Yanli Li at yli@wlu.ca  or Maha Kumaran at maha.kumaran@usask.ca.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
