October Guest Artist Presentation:
Kaylee Appleton, Photography

The meeting is Thursday, October 2nd - 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts (P-A CVA) in Denton.

Kaylee Appleton combines and manipulates the digital code of photographs to communicate the interconnections within life, and technology's role in society. Appleton will speak about the evolution of her current area of research, which involves the manipulation of the digital code of photography. Kaylee will present several photographic series that explore the experimentation of her working methodology and the ideas and concepts behind her artwork.

Appleton is a Texas-based artist who works primarily in photography. She is formerly from Hobbs, New Mexico. She received a BFA in Studio Art/Photography from Texas Tech in 2005 and worked as an aviation and corporate photographer in Fort Worth before pursuing an MFA in Studio Art/Photography. She is currently in her last semester of graduate school at Texas Woman's University.

Please Note: November's Meeting will be November 13th, not the usual first week of the month.

Also note that VAST is in the process of switching over to a new website, one that will be easier to navigate and update, one where members can update their own personal information.  Yes, the automated message that you may have received from the Visual Arts Society of Texas is legit. The necessary information will follow for everyone to log on, by way of information at the October meeting and/or through a future email. Thanks to the endless energy and knowledge of Maurice Leatherbury and Christie A. Wood, we are finally seeing a new VAST website!

Monthly Mini-Shows

VAST members are encouraged to bring a piece of art to our monthly meetings for a member's choice competition.  We vote on our favorite pieces during the break.  At the conclusion of the program, we award the first place winner "Artist of the Month," who receives a $25 gift certificate from Asel Art Supply redeemable at any of their locations. The second place winner receives a $15 gift certificate from Asel.  The mini-show doesn't take place at the meeting when we have our High School Art Competition.  At the May meeting, all "Artists of the Month" bring back their winning artwork, and from these pieces, we vote and select our "Artist of the Year."  Once you have won "Artist of the Month" you are not eligible to win that award again in the current VAST year, but may bring work for "show" to subsequent monthly meetings after winning.

Artwork of Gail W. Cope

Gail Cope's statement: "My work has evolved to a series of mixed media paintings exploring the reduction of mark making to the simplest forms-dots, dashes and circles. Although the use of these most basic forms would imply a simple surface, in fact the marks are layered in complex ways, and the background or under-painting takes on even more importance as it interacts with the layers. I enjoy using iconic images and symbols and putting my own twist to them.

The predominant element of my work is the dot or circle, referring to the eternal, and used as decoration in many religions and cultures around the world. I find that when working with the dots and other patterns I fall into a relaxed state, almost like Zen meditation.  There is a fascination with how many ways I can make the dots, and what different affects I can create."

"Scratching the Surface Retrospective"

Laurie Weller's work can be seen through October 17, 2014.

The work is a collection of paintings and monoprints, which Weller specifically chose for the intimate Black Box setting. She states, "Both the Caran-dAche monoprints and the carved paintings began as translations of sketches into new forms that took new directions as they progressed."

The surfaces of the paintings have been sensitively "scratched" in preparation for painting.  Weller says this work was begun during a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) many years ago. While at ACA, Weller was invited to sit in on a jazz session and while listening to music, she began to draw the sounds of the music. This experience has profoundly affected her work.

The monoprints included in the exhibition were done while involved in abstracting drawings of seashells and human anatomy.  The works Corona I and Corona 4 have elements of a conch shell and elements that reference brain cells. She states, "They started with both, but are neither. They are much more about exploring the formal elements of line, form, color, and space in a playful way, putting down a mark and seeing where it leads me."

Coordinator for exhibit: Jo Williams at texjo@msn.com
