Come along on the journey!
Day 13: Dancing to a Latin Beat!
Destination: World Music Day!
Fun Facts:
Here we are on Sunday again! We've been criss-crossing the world this week, so it's time to take it easy. You can choose to nap and rest, relax in a chair and read, or go wandering. You (and we!) are getting
a "Day on your Own" (you know, like tours do some times). Here's a musical break.
Art Form: Putumayo World Music
For years we have featured the world music CDs of Putumayo World Music. Since they are all about bringing
to us the sights, sounds and cultures from around the world, it has always been a perfect fit for World's Window. It seems only fitting to share some of our favorite CDs on our tour "rest" days.
We've chosen 2 CDs, "Mexico" and "Cuba! Cuba!" Yesterday's tour visit was to Oaxaca, Mexico, to see the famous hand-carved wooden "animalitos" and learn about alebrijes. Since we are "resting" in Mexico, let's first go explore the wide range of music around us.
"Mexico"
-
Savor the spicy and romantic flavors of Mexican music, from the Sones Jarocho of Veracruz to the boleros of Oaxaca.
While mariachi is indeed an important part of Mexican musical culture, it is just one aspect of a scene that also includes rhythmic harps of Veracruz, peppy accordion riffs of
norteƱo and poetic ballads of Oaxaca.
Every year, millions of people travel to Mexico. Many head to the tourist resorts and beautiful beaches of Playa del Carmen or Puerto Vallarta. Others trek to the highlands of Oaxaca and Chiapas, where for centuries impassable forests have shielded indigenous cultures from total assimilation.
Mexican culture is as diverse as its landscape. Its roots stretch back thousands of years to the Aztec, Maya, Zapotec and other Native American empires. Echoes of these indigenous cultures still resound loudly in the modern setting, informing all cultural expressions including language, food, art, architecture and, of course, music. While the Spanish imposed their language, culture and religion on the local populations, the result of 500 years of cross-cultural fusion is a remarkable blend of European and indigenous cultures, with elements of African influence sprinkled along the Gulf and Pacific coasts.
AND . . .
"Cuba, Cuba" -
A captivating collection of Cuban classic and contemporary songs that will have you dancing the night away.
Cuba is one of those musically fertile places Putumayo continues to return to. It provides musical "comfort food," and we just can't seem to get enough!
Featured artists on this cd include: Armando Garzon, Asere, Jose Conde, Familia Valera Miranda, Soneros de Verdad, Sonlokos, PALO! and many others!
Today's featured group via music video is PALO! PALO! plays their own style of Cuban music they call "Afro-Cuban Funk". Just think "funky, jazzy salsa", or better yet, listen to some of their music. Settle back or get ready to dance. Here is "Al Monte."

Greetings on our 13th day of this grand tour. Have you wondered who is "steering" this tour ship? Here are your tour leaders and support staff. It's a fun group and vitally important to keeping this ship afloat.
Jan (yours truly) is your tour leader, making decisions on on our itinerary and crafting the final newsletters that invite you along each day. Stephanie (on the right) is our main researcher with our tour destinations, working out details on the places we'll visit and gathering information. And, that shadowy figure with her? Judy who proof-read our entire Shopify site to correct all my errors in entry.
Eliot is our technical know-how guy, master-mind of all things electronically challenging and correcting the details. Lonnie keeps track of where we're headed with an eagle eye and directs us back on the right path if we've veered off.
And Della is keeping all-thing-store-based running smoothly with a few orders arriving, daily boxes of orders being shipped out, sales details, and new front window displays for your enjoyment.
We are glad to be on this journey with you and delighted that you have joined us. We hope you are learning some new information as we travel along.
If you haven't already done so, invite some friends to come along! There's still room on this journey!
Do you journal? Today might be a good time to get your "Trip Journal" caught up. Or, are you new to our journey? Click here if you want to review where we've been in the last 12 days.
