Compassionate Care Awards Fund New Community Pharmacy

The seating charts were diagrammed, the flower arrangements were in place and the honoree certificates were framed — it was time to welcome over 300 guests to CrossOver's thirteenth annual Compassionate Care Awards event at 6 p.m. October 20 at the Jefferson Hotel!

The focal point of the program celebrated and honored three CrossOver volunteer nurses, Karen N. Murphy, RN, MSN; Helen Q. Nunley, RN, MSN; and Cathy Tuck, RN, BSN. Three incredible videos featuring each honoree from a variety of patient and co-worker perspectives served to illuminate their unique contributions to CrossOver's mission. A fourth patient video helped drive home the impact CrossOver has in patients' lives.

Kaitlyn Patterson, CrossOver's nurse manager, was also recognized, emphasizing the real-life results the CCA paddle raise funds have at CrossOver; in 2020, the CCA paddle raise funded a new nurse manager position, and Kaitlyn joined CrossOver's staff in 2021. She has been vital to the organization in numerous ways such as: overseeing our COVID-19 testing and vaccination strategy; providing structure, training, and enhanced onboarding and resources for all staff and volunteer nurses; overseeing the overhaul and review of patient education materials and protocols to ensure we’re meeting health literacy and language needs of our clients, and so much more.
This year's paddle raise invited guests to donate towards CrossOver's pharmacy relocation project which would enable us to utilize more volunteers, meet facility requirements set by the board of pharmacy, and be a space that is dignifying of our clients. The new space would be constructed at our Henrico Clinic, more than doubling the size of our cramped 150-square-foot pharmacy now located at the Richmond Clinic.
CrossOver's volunteer-driven community pharmacy was highlighted in detail regarding its critical role for not just CrossOver patients, but also the five other charitable healthcare clinics in the greater Richmond area. We provide over 33,000 prescriptions annually to CrossOver patients and patients via the five other area clinics. In order to continue to serve effectively as the Community Pharmacy, more space is needed, including the physical space and build-out of an entirely new pharmacy, secure storage for medications, a private area for medication counseling and education, a dedicated workspace for staff, and a workspace for filling prescriptions.

Guests responded to the call to action with overwhelming enthusiasm; crushing our paddle raise goal of $100,000, the grand total for this portion of the CCA event was $257,250. In combination with individual contributions, this incredible total was achieved, in part, due to two particular entities. The Noble Mission Fund had pledged a gift of $25,000 should we raise $75,0000 through the paddle raise and Molina Healthcare came through with an incredible surprise gift of $150,000 that evening.
Altogether, through sponsorships, ticket sales, program ads, and the paddle raise, the 2022 CCA event raised $469,000 before expenses. To say we are grateful would be an understatement. You, our supporters, have made all of this possible and our patients and their families will benefit from your profound generosity for many years to come.
