Dear St. Serra Parents,

Foundational Values are things that we believe in and are guiding principles that ‘do not change’! These Foundational Values are also critical to our identity, what we stand for and what we believe in. As individuals, there are many kinds of Foundational Values that we identify with. They can be moral and spiritual values, corporate values, personal and family values, social and cultural values, economic values, and political values. These values help make us who we are and help guide us in the decisions that we make.

Additionally, St. Serra has Foundational Values that will help guide us academically and spiritually. At St. Serra we must not compromise on these values. Our Faith is a main Foundational Value. Helping create and develop a child's Catholic Identity through the daily teachings of the Catholic Standards and principles is something that we will not compromise on. It is critical that we keep this a top priority at our school.

Academically, it is equally important that we continue to provide our students with the most current information and best practices when it comes to education. Our students deserve to be well prepared moving forward. We cannot cheat our kids as every single minute in the classroom is critical. Good things happen and learning occurs when children are in the classroom! At St. Serra, we will continue to audit everything that we do and adapt when necessary keeping in mind our Catholic Mission, as well as preparing our students for their next endeavor.

Always Striving,

Tim Tolzda
Sr. Principal

COVID-19 Protocol & Student Symptom Decision Tree
The CDC and the Orange County Health Care Agency continually review and adjust their suggested practices and protocols based on emerging information about COVID-19. This memo is to announce some important changes regarding St. Serra’s COVID-19 protocols based on CDC and OCHCA guidance. Effective January 1, 2021, St. Serra has updated the return-to-school policy when a student is exposed to COVID-19.
ELA and Math Placement for Students in Grades 1-7
Each year we use the data pieces from the placement handout to place students in the appropriate level English Language Arts (ELA) and Math classes. Letters indicating placement will be sent in mid-August. Parents of students who are placed in small group classes will receive an email by the end of June to help inform review work during the summer.

For the last several years, it has been our practice to assess and place first-grade students into the advanced plus and small group ELA classes during the first month of the new school year. We will continue that practice in the 2021-2022 school year. New students will be assessed and placed into the appropriate level ELA and Math classes at the beginning of the school year. Please be sure to communicate to your children that it is still important for them to remain engaged and doing their best through the end of this school year. Placements are fluid, and students are considered for movement within levels during the school year based on performance.
Attention Students Who Have Recently Received Their First Communion
If you have an older child in Grades 3-8 who recently received his/her First Eucharist at this Easter's Vigil or during this Easter Season at your parish, please send Mrs. Reiss an email as we would like to include them in the upcoming Marian Mass. Mrs. Reiss will give you further direction regarding the Marian Mass.
IMPORTANT: Last Chance to Register for STAR Test Notifications
The final diocesan STAR testing window for the 2020-2021 school year is May 10 through May 21. Students will take the STAR Math test during the week of May 10 and the STAR Reading test during the week of May 17. The email notification system in Renaissance Home Connect is the delivery method for STAR test results this year. Results will not be sent home from the school. If you want to see your children's STAR test results, you must sign up for email notifications on their Home Connect pages. And you must do it before your child takes the tests.
Therefore, if you want to view your children's results on the upcoming STAR Math and STAR Reading tests, you must register on Renaissance Home Connect by tomorrow morning.
Safe Environment Online Training Renewal
We are finding that a lot of our parents’ Safe Environment Training Certificates have expired over this past year, and with us moving towards allowing more volunteers on campus, we need to remedy this as quickly as possible. This is where you can help.
