Meet Nubia
Nubia Torres immigrated to the USA in 2016 from Mexico when her husband, a work visa holder, relocated here to work with one of the biggest manufacturing companies in Wisconsin. After her arrival, Nubia enrolled in both the ELL classes and Tutoring program at the Winnebago Area Literacy Council.

She has a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, but wanted to work on her conversational skills and improve her employability.

 WALC strives to make sure all residents in Winnebago community thrive. Their Road to Work (RTW) provides refugees and immigrants with vocational literacy training to help them obtain employment. RTW helps program participants use their skills to reach their full potential in the workforce.

Associate Director
Join our team! Wisconsin Literacy seeks an Associate Director to help fulfill its mission to change lives by strengthening literacy statewide. WL is a growing organization with a staff and board of creative and dedicated people who support the organization’s core values of lifelong learning, collaboration, integrity, inclusion and equity, innovation, and teamwork.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director has both internal and external facing responsibilities. The Associate Director partners closely with the Executive Director to chart WL’s planned response to organizational opportunities and challenges and plays a critical role as strategic thought-partner for the Executive Director.

Like the summer reading program from your childhood, you choose from a number of engagement and learning activities and track progress using our “Journey Through Literacy” map.

Call for Member Representatives to the Wisconsin Literacy Board
Wisconsin Literacy seeks nominations for member representatives to serve on the board.

Member representatives must:
  • serve a two-year term, with an option for one additional two-year term
  • attend board meetings six times a year (currently virtually)
  • serve on one committee six times a year
  • share member agency best practices and current issues
  • help build connections and fundraise for Wisconsin Literacy

A preferred candidate would:
  • be an executive director, director, or program supervisor at a member agency; and/or
  • serve in the Northwest, Northeast, North Central, South Central (outside Madison), or Southeast (outside Milwaukee).

UNIDOS is seeking a skilled, bilingual, mission-driven, and experienced nonprofit business leader to fill the role of Executive Director.
Literacy Network is Seeking a Citizenship Program Manager
The Citizenship Program Manager is a full-time employee who administers Literacy Network’s English for Citizenship program. As of this posting, 23 adult learners achieved citizenship through this program in 2021! The Manager develops communicative, goal-based language instruction in group settings to support English Language Learning (ELL) adults in achieving their goals and provides both initial training and ongoing skill development to volunteer citizenship tutors. This position also manages the federal AEFLA grant for English for Citizenship, gathering and tracking student data and outcomes, pre- and post-testing participants, and preparing grant reports.

Dan Zanes, A Grammy-Award winning musician, shared his 12 tips for being less racist. Excerpt below:

It doesn’t help anyone if I start chastising other white folks for doing the same things I’ve undoubtedly done at one point or another in my own life. Racism has been systematically harming people of color for millennia, and it’s been stripping white people of their humanity every step of the way. For me as a white dude, the process of becoming aware and engaged has been awkward, exciting, heartbreaking, mysterious, and ongoing. Here’s my best advice if you want to join me on the way.

Speak Up About Literacy

We will engage Representative Amy Loudenbeck (District 31) and Senator LaTonya Johnson (District 6) in a conversation about advocacy and how easy it is to reach out to your legislator.

You will learn:
  • Why you should reach out to your legislator.
  • Ways you can reach out to your legislator.
  • How to set up a literacy program visit with your legislator.

Michele Erikson, Executive Director of Wisconsin Literacy, will be available for follow-up questions and to share how advocacy makes a difference.
