28 March 2021
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We end this service on a solemn note, as we enter into Holy Week.

Earth Tenebrae

Wednesday, March 31; 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM via zoom

As we remember Jesus' suffer and lament our own sins and places of loss this year, this time of worship speaks to the suffering of our earth and all creation: lamenting the extinction of creatures in our modern era, and naming that creation, too, is a part of the world for which Jesus suffered and died.

A collaborative offering from your Region Missionaries, The Rev. Tuesday Rupp of St. Paul’s, Woodbury, The Rev. Anita Schell of St. Ann’s, Old Lyme, The Rev. Erin Flinn of St. Stephen’s, East Haddam, and The Rev. Norman MacLeod, retired, from Rhode Island (and the creator of this order of worship)

Black Lives Matter to God and to Us
If you’ve driven down Sigourney St. by the Church this week you may have noticed a new addition to the close: a 4x6 sign that reads “Black Lives Matter to God and to Us” While there may be disagreement about various political strategies that have been lumped under the umbrella of the Black Lives Matter movement, our sign is not about endorsing any particular political strategy or tactic. Instead, the sign is an outward and visible symbol of the commitment that we have made at Trinity Church to continue to do the work of dismantling white supremacy, racism, and anti-Black violence in ourselves and in our neighborhood. Putting up the sign is one way of embodying our commitment. What other ways might we continue to live into the commitments of our Baptism to “see and serve Christ in all person, loving our neighbor as ourselves” and to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every being?

Black Lives Matter to God. Black Lives Matter to Us.

May God who has given us the will to persevere on this journey give us the grace and power to live like it!

Communal Prayer Video

From now until March 31st, Michelle Horsley is accepting video submissions of the Lord's Prayer, to be compiled into a communal prayer video. If you're filming on a cell phone, please angle the phone horizontally and choose a quiet, well-lit room. These videos will be compiled and turned into a communal prayer, which will be aired during the Easter Sunday livestream. Please join us!

Email Spam Reminder

There has been another increase in spam emails purporting to be coming from Rev. D.

Please remember that Rev. D. will never email you asking you to purchase gift cards, or to urgently email back but not call. If it’s urgent Rev. D will call you and will not request that you not call. An easy way to check the validity of an email is to check the ‘from’ email address. Finally, if there is any doubt, DO NOT RESPOND TO THE EMAIL. Instead, call or text Rev. D. at 860-986-3289.

Women Together

Women Together will start a new series on April 6th, discussing “Parting Words: A Farewell Discourse” by Barbara C. Harris, a collection of eight of her sermons. The Rt. Rev. Harris was the first woman consecrated a bishop in the Anglican Communion, and she was known for her electrifying preaching and for her civil rights work.
Currently, women from Trinity, St. John's, and St. Monica's participate in WT, and we meet weekly via Zoom on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:15 pm. Newcomers are always welcome to join in!

The book is available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
For more information about WT, and to receive a link to the meeting, please contact Heather Kramer (heatherjk1989@gmail.com) or Enid Oberholtzer (tomenidjas@aol.com).

Memorial Garden Committee Seeking Volunteers

With the blessing of the Vestry, Erica Weinstock has agreed to chair the newly forming Memorial Garden Committee to shepherd the care and maintenance of the Memorial Garden and the Sigourney Street gardens adjacent to the main entrance to the Nave.

Erica is looking forward to working in the garden with all who would like to participate in a new season of working outside together. If are interested you can’t make it on Tuesday, please drop Erica a note with your thoughts; suggestions for alternate meeting times that might be more convenient; and if you know of anyone interested in joining the team. Erica can be reached at ericajw@mac.com .

Trinity Book Group

“Animals don’t exist in order to teach us things, but that is what they have always done, and most of what they teach us is what we think we know about ourselves.” So writes Helen Macdonald, author of Vesper Flights, the book to be discussed at the next meeting of Trinity's Book Group on Friday, March 26th.

The book contains short essays on topics ranging from the migration of songbirds to hunting mushrooms, in a style described as “breathtaking” and “dazzling”.

All are most welcome to join in this Zoom meeting, starting at 7:00 pm and lasting about an hour. For a link, please contact Linda MacGougan at macgougans@gmail.com

Life in the Spirit Book Group Resumes April 5th

You’re invited

In response to a conversation with Al Shuckra last May, a small group of Trinity parishioners decided to read and discuss “The Universal Christ” by Richard Rohr, meeting by Zoom every Monday evening for an hour, over a number of months. The last chapter we read together the week after Al died.

Our experience was so rich that we’ve decided to continue. We have just finished our third book, “Beginning to Pray” by Metropolitan Anthony Bloom.

We’d like to invite you to join us in reading and discussing our next book, “Listening to the Heartbeat of God : A Celtic Spirituality” by the Rev. Dr. J. Philip Newell. “Listening for the Heartbeat of God presents a spirituality for today, modeled on the vital characteristics of Celtic spirituality through the centuries. Here is an emphasis on the essential goodness of creation and of humanity made in the image of God. This book traces the lines of Celtic spirituality from the British church in the fourth century through to the twentieth century, in the founder of the Iona Community, George Macleod.”

We meet Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 pm via Zoom, beginning again with our new book on Monday, April 5, 2021.

For more information, contact Drew Smith at ktadsmith@comcast.net or 860-331-9021.

Companions of the Holy Cross Open Meeting:

19 April 10:00-12:00

The Companions of the Holy Cross invite the women of the parish to a book discussion of "How to Be an Antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi.   We will discuss this best selling book in hopes of understanding this controversial topic better.
Please contact Kate Smith at Kate48smith@comcast.net for details.
