What you need to know this week

(click here for the video version)

Hello St. Mary’s!

Fr. Scott here with a few things you need to know for the weeks coming up. First, please join us this Sunday after worship for a conversation about our process with St. Ann’s. In August the wardens and I gave you a brief update about the process, but now it’s time to hear from you. We have several discussion questions to go through together, and what your input!

Then, Sunday evening at 5, come back to the church for an outdoor gathering open to the people of St. Ann’s. This is intended to be a low-key event just to give us time to be with one another. Think of it like you’re coming to a Raue concert on the lawn, but this time it’s a simple church service. We’ll gather on the lawn, bring your own snacks and drinks, bring something to share if you’d like, and we will have some time to just be together. There will be a simple, spoken prayer service outdoors at 5 pm, and then we can just enjoy each others’ company. It looks like the Bears play at noon, so you should have plenty of time to head over after they win! If it’s raining on Sunday, then we will cancel and push back a couple of weeks.

And then next Saturday, October 1, at noon, St. Mary’s has an opportunity to gather with St. Ann’s at a local conservation area (details below). Again you can bring your own lunch or something to share, we’ll hang out, and have a brief worship service together at noon. Then there are trails to walk if you’d like, though please know that you are welcome even if you can’t walk the trails: the picnic area is handicap accessible.

Last but not least, put our annual blessing of the animals on your calendar. This will be on the St. Mary’s lawn at 2 pm on Sunday, October 2. All creatures great and small are welcome to come and be blessed.

I look forward to getting to know you better at some of these upcoming events!

Picnic and Prayer with St. Ann’s

THIS SUNDAY AT 5! - Picnic and Prayer on the lawn at St. Mary’s, Crystal Lake - bring your own dinner, snacks, or drinks, hang out, socialize, and pray (there will be a brief service of Eucharist outdoors at 5 p.m., with social time to follow).

Saturday, October 1, 12 p.m. - Joint outdoor Eucharist at Kishwaukee Headwaters Conservation Area (1606 Dean St., Woodstock) - worship and picnic, with a blessing of waters. Bring your own lunch and/or bring something to share! Note that there is accessible parking and an easy, paved path to the picnic area.

October 2, 2:00 pm

Join us here at St. Mary's for our annual Blessing of the Animals. More details to follow!

Roadmap for Discernment Process

At the end of the joint vestry meeting with St. Ann's on July 30, Fr. Matthew, the meeting facilitator, shared an overview of where both parishes are heading in our discernment of how we may work together. The wardens and clergy then met with Fr. Matthew to put together a meeting calendar for this fall.

Topics and details for these meetings will follow, but we wanted you to have the dates for your calendar. On Sunday, August 28th, after worship, there was a congregational meeting at St. Mary's to give an overview of the vestry retreat and discernment process and to answer questions from the congregation.

On Sunday, September 25, after the 9 am service, we will have another similar meeting at St. Mary's.  In October, November and December, the vestries will have joint meetings at each other's campus to further discuss these opportunities for collaboration and outreach.
