Negotiation is a core skill needed by all municipal employees, including clerks and deputy clerks. We negotiate every day when we decide who gets the day off and who needs to be at work, when we create and finalize the budget, and when we decide which vendor to choose to build that new online system. This course examines the many factors necessary for effectively negotiation in all situations where collective decisions are made. When we negotiate, it is important to communicate constructively to create a positive frame of reference to help open up as many options as possible. Topics include understanding the difference between an integrative vs. distributive negotiation and which is best for your situation. We will also look at how to apply ethical standards, develop rapport, and build trust in relationships. We will learn the role of silence in a negotiation and how best to deciphering body language and tone of voice.
