Dear AUHSD Students and Parents,

The Governing Board will discuss the reopening plan for the 2020-2021 school year again next week on August 5 at their open session meeting beginning at 7:00 pm. The agenda will be posted Sunday morning .

During the meeting, the plans to open the year in distance learning will be reviewed. A new draft distance learning schedule will be presented for discussion and approval. The structures to support professional development, student orientation and parent engagement will be discussed.

During the first week of school, there will be a very intentional effort to set students up for success in distance learning, build community, connect students, establish a sense of inclusion for all and support student wellness.   We want to lay the foundation for social emotional support for students during distance learning by engaging students in discussions around identity, race and inclusion.

In order to do so, we plan to utilize a different schedule during the first week for the required program. We will begin August 11 at 9:00am with our Virtual Cohort Academy, which will then meet each morning of the week. Students will engage in asynchronous tutorials and learning modules on Canvas, our new learning management system, through the afternoon. We believe this approach will orient students, communicate our expectations for distance learning and online decorum, and set the stage for a successful distance learning experience. More information on this schedule will be provided by your school prior to the start of the school year.

You should be hearing from your school site this week and next regarding online registration and residency verification, mascot days, orientation, instructional supplies and more. For updated information, please visit your school's website.

The District will issue a Distance Learning Plan and Guidelines following next week's Board meeting. The document will provide detailed guidelines and expectations for our distance learning program.

Take care and stay well.

Sincerely,

John Nickerson
