An academic bilingual community fostering global citizenship
11-19-2020

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community,

I hope that this finds your family healthy and well. As we are moving towards full distance learning for all of our students next Monday, November 23rd, I am grateful to our teachers and staff members for thinking deeply about how best to help our Spanish immersion students learn in this next phase of the school year. We will continue to gather feedback from our students, families, and staff, always putting our children at the forefront of our decisions.

Our classroom teachers are communicating the schedule for your child(ren) for next week. Please also know that we are working on a plan to have "book check out" from our media center. More details will follow shortly.

To boost us into next week, we encourage our students to wear Park Pride/PSI attire next Monday and sports themed attire on Tuesday. I hope that you are able to make some fun memories next week.

Take care, and see you soon!

Sincerely,

Corey Maslowski
Proud Principal

P.S. I'm looking forward to connecting with community members during Coffee with Corey tomorrow at 7:00 am or 12:15 pm. Please send your questions, topics, clarifications in advance by clicking HERE.

Please Keep Us Informed...
As we move into distance learning next week, even though we're not physically in school, it's important that you still call the attendance line when your child is sick (952-928-6570) - especially if it's a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 case.

We also need data about who has been asked to quarantine at both student and staff levels to ensure our positive cases have stabilized when we want to bring students back from the buildings.

Our public health agencies at the state and country levels are overwhelmed with current number of positve cases. School nurses and health office staff are playing a crucial role in helping with contact tracing and investigating, and are far more likely to answer questions in a timely manner.

Please call PSI Health Services at 952-928-6554 with questions. Click HERE for more information.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID19)
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus. Every day we learn new things about this virus, for this reason. We are working with partners to slow the spread of COVID-19, but everyone in the state has a role to play in making this happen. Anyone of any age can get the disease. Some people can get sicker than others. People who are sick with COVID-19 can spread it to others, sometimes even when they don't feel sick. Viruses don't discriminate, so avoid assumptions about who may or may not be sick. 5 Ways to Support Kids with ADHD During Remote Learning
Tears and tantrums—popular words among parents who’ve taken to social media to describe remote learning for their kids with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Without the usual support from teachers or the familiarity of classroom rules and structure, the struggle to stay organized and keep up with lessons and homework has suddenly become overwhelming.

School District News
Urgent Action Needed: Free & Reduced Applications
As the District begins to transition back to the distance learning model, free meals will continue to be available to students and families. The District will continue to utilize the six school sites as grab-and-go pickup locations on Mondays and Wednesdays between 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

Urgent Action Needed: Free & Reduced Applications

You can help generate state aid for your St. Louis Park Public Schools by completing the Application for Educational Benefits.

Students in households that meet the free or reduced-price meal income guidelines will generate compensatory revenue for the district. Schools must use compensatory revenue to meet the needs of students who are behind their peers, such as remedial instruction, instructional materials including digital learning and technology, bilingual programs and additional teachers and teacher aides. However, the household must complete and return the forms, or complete the online form, no later than December 15 so the district can calculate eligibility and report to the Minnesota Department of Education. This will not impact your students’ eligibility to receive free meals during the 2020-21 school year because meals are free for all students this year.
St. Louis Park Public Schools & Community Foundation
Give To The Max Day - November 19
The Park Public Schools & Community Foundation, in partnership with Minnesota Philanthropies, enhances educational opportunities and community programming for kids in St. Louis Park. The Foundation works to enrich and inspire the continuing excellence of all our youth, from preschool through high school, and works in partnership with school, business and community.

It is the mission of the Park Public Schools & Community Foundation to make a positive impact in St. Louis Park by providing grants for projects in the St. Louis Park Public Schools and to nonprofits supporting youth programs outside of the classroom.

The Foundation is in the midst of their FIRST fundraiser - facemasks. And in keeping with their core values, the fundraiser serves SLP Students - when you buy one mask for $10, one mask will be donated to a SLP student.

Following is a Facebook blog post link to the GiveMN website where you can purchase the masks: https://www.givemn.org/story/Slpmasks?fbclid=IwAR20AurRI7bB2_Q6DkJwzBkt0S2zB20wAqIK7vO6Kjtj0n7QxSKsWMmjLD0

The Foundation is a GREAT supporter of our schools and students! Annually, they give more than $50,000 in mini-grants to SLP teachers to fund innovative classroom grants in the areas of literacy, math, fine arts, and transitions.

Like our kids, teachers and staff, we’re busy doing all we can to make this school year a success. Part of that includes rethinking familiar events, adding new connections and making sure old favorites continue however they can.

Room parents: If you’re interested in serving as a room parent, volunteer directly with your child’s teacher.

Spirit wear: TODAY is the deadline to order. See below.

Directory: Each year, the district provides updated contact information in November. Volunteers will update the directory as soon as we receive the data. In the meantime, please visit psipto.membershiptoolkit.com to add your student(s) and access the existing directory information.

Math Night: Mathnasium will not be hosting these events for the ‘20-21 school year, but hopes to return next year. Any ideas, suggestions or volunteers for an alternative event are welcome!

Imagination & Inventors' Fair: While this will not be an in-person event this year, we’re hoping to explore alternative options. Any ideas, suggestions or volunteers welcome!

Amity Interns: Unfortunately, due to COVID, we will not be having any Amity Interns this school year. We will continue to fundraise to welcome Amity Interns in fall of 2021.

Volunteers: Yes, volunteers are still needed! Please review the following needs and offer your time and talents wherever you can. Some positions will take place next school year (e.g., Leer-a-tón, Math Night) but it’s never too early to make sure needs are covered! Need more info on what these involve? Happy to chat! Want to volunteer but not sure how or what position? Let us know and we’ll find something that works for you, whether it’s a quick, one-time task, ongoing leadership or anything in between.

Seeds Feeds: Fresh Food to Folks in Hennepin County through Dec. 30
We at Seeds Feeds (formerly known as SLP SEEDS) are proud to announce we have just received a $50k grant from the Hennepin Expanded Cares Act grant to provide fresh food to folks in Hennepin County through December 30, 2020.

We wanted you to know so you can help us spread the word and make sure we can get food to anyone in need!

We have $35,000 to give food to anyone in need… but only for seven weeks, so…

We’re feeding everyone REALLY WELL!!!
All organic everything from meat to detergent!

Currently the signup is a registration survey form. We're working on an online order system so folks can tell us what they need, like:
· Personal essentials;
· fresh or stable food; and
· we’re working on holiday meal packages, too.

We also will talk people through the order process who have online access barriers.

There’s curbside pickup and free delivery if transportation barriers are an issue.

We are also working with a Hennepin County Juvenile Probation Officer to get food to youth and their families whose challenges to find good paying jobs are even more exacerbated than those who suffer food insecurity without a criminal history.

We just wanted to make sure you know we’ve been able to expand and extend our services as winter begins and food is more challenging than ever for those in need. Please do send folks our way!

Other great news of a totally different topic, we’ve been awarded a $30,000 grant to build an Educational Schoolyard Garden by HDR Foundation. More news coming!!

Hoping this finds you and yours well and safe, and well-fed. Let’s offer that to everyone we can during this challenging winter and holiday season!

In appreciation of your support in sharing this outstanding offer to those suffering food insecurity,

Kind regards and well wishes,
Julie Rappaport, Treasurer

Children's Grief Awareness Day - TODAY, November 19
November 19th, 2020 is Children’s Grief Awareness Day. This day is acknowledged across the world as a day to recognize the needs of grieving children and the importance of the support provided by people like you. The day is scheduled on the third Thursday in November, which marks preparation for the holiday season ahead when grief can be especially difficult to manage. As this day approaches, the Growing Through Grief team wants to remind you that we continue to be available for your students through peer support groups and/or individual sessions. We are also available for collaborative support secondary to death related events within your school community. Our contact list of counselors is attached for your reference. Please feel free to reach out at any time to partner and arrange a connection for your students.

After 23 years of service providing school based grief support, we recognize the hard work this year has brought on with so many evolving needs. Thank you for your dedication to the students, families and community. We value our partnership and continue to be available to respond your child and teen death related grief support needs.

Thank you for all you do,
