Are you Worried about your Right to Vote?
We all Should Be!
According to the Texas Civil Rights Project, more than 20 bills have been filed in the House and Senate to further restrict voter registration and voter’s rights in Texas even though Texas voters already have the hardest time exercising their rights to vote.
This list highlights the threats to our rights and to make it worse, most of these bills were filed by or are supported by our own local legislators.
General trend of threats:
Voter registration should be harder, and voter purges easier
HB 61, HB 329, HB 335, HB 1026, HB 1264/SB 569, SB 155
Vote by mail should be harder
HB 25/SB 208, HB 61, HB 330
Voting laws should be further criminalized through new offenses, harsher penalties, and more investigations by the Attorney General
HB 329, HB 330, HB 335, HB 574, HB 895, HB 1368, SB 155
The Secretary of State should have greater authority over elections
HB 329, HB 1026
Assistance to voters must be further limited
HB 330, HB 611

Our family would like to thank The Mayor of Conroe Jody Czajkoski, the City Council, and the administration for bestowing a proclamation in honor of our mother Annie Jefferson-Burnett on Thursday night. Mom's presence was felt in the room when the mayor was reading her history. Her works and legacy will live on and not be forgotten.
*A copy of this award will be displayed at Montgomery County Democratic Headquarters in her memory.

MCDP has a new Election Coordinator
Glenna Sloan is stepping down as Election Coordinator and Christy Vines will be taking on that important position. Her email for elections or election workers is electcoor@mcdptx.org. We want to thank Glenna for all of her hard work and commitment to a successful election. We wish Christy the best and encourage all who can to volunteer to be an election clerk or a judge. We cannot have only Republicans run our elections. It is more important than ever to have Democrats on duty at polling places.

People, Can we talk?
Community Assistance Center's (CAC) Resale Shop, Unique Resale, is in dire need of volunteers. The store is currently open on Tues, Thurs, and Fri from 9 am to 4 pm and the lack of help is preventing us from opening on Mondays and Wednesdays. This directly impacts the individuals and families we serve because we can only provide clothing vouchers on Tuesdays and Thursdays due to our current limitations with volunteers.
Individuals interested in serving can easily sign up by going to www.cac-mctx.org/volunteer/ and complete the volunteer registration form online. For questions, please contact CAC's Community Engagement Manager, Renée Blacklaws at 936-494-4414 or by email at renee@cac-mctx.org
Thank you for sharing this information for CAC!

If you are running for office the TCBD wants to talk to you
CBD 2022 Statewide and Congressional Candidates Screening Committee evaluate new candidates through a questionnaire process.
If you are planning to run as a Democratic statewide or congressional candidate on the 2022 Primary Ballot, please contact the Committee Co-Chairs at Texasblackdem@gmail.com to receive a Candidate Screening Questionnaire and to Schedule a Screening Interview.
The Screening Committee will be responsible for interviewing and evaluating candidates based on the following: their record and experience; their competence, vision and demonstrated ability to lead, bring people together and solve complicated policy and community problems; their public position on issues of importance to Black Democrats and our communities throughout the state; their commitment to justice, fairness, opportunity, diversity, and inclusion; the diverse and inclusive makeup of their campaign staff and consultants; their level of small-dollar donor support; and their prior level of community involvement, activism and the public policy positions and commitments of their campaign or lack thereof.
As we have all seen recently, who leads our state matters and can at times, literally, be the difference between life and death for Texans.
Thank you for your commitment to our democracy, our nation, the state, and the Texas Democratic Party. The Coalition looks forward to hearing all about your substantive policy ideas for making our nation and state more just, prosperous, inclusive, and fair as well as your strategy for winning both the primary and general election.

Change starts at the bottom
Did you know there is an election on May 1? No one I have asked said yes. If we as Democrats want to turn Texas blue we need to know about these elections. Elections put people on the school board who, in turn, select the school books from which our kids will learn. These elections also can put more people on local city council positions who make decisions for all of us including minorities and children. They decide issues of local access to libraries, playgrounds, and more.
It is a nonpartisan election, so the MCDP cannot endorse anyone. Watch this space for information on the elections in your area. Make sure you are registered to vote. Check your status today at montgomeryvotes.org.
