Rector's Ramblings

Rector's Ramblings

Elmer heard that there was a virus spreading in his community, and he didn't know what to make of it. His cable news programs seemed to air conflicting opinion stories. Some health experts said it was serious, and some didn't. Early on, they said don't wear masks, but eventually it seemed like everyone agreed on wearing masks. Almost. Politicians seemed to be conflicted, too.  He wondered if it wasn't all just hype in an election year? He'd had the flu a couple of times and it wasn't that bad. He guessed he'd just be careful. God had always watched over him. No doubt God was watching out for him now.

Communion At Home - July 21-24
We will be celebrating Holy Eucharist on Sunday, July 19. That day, we will invite those of you watching from home to pray the prayer of spiritual communion, and we will also be consecrating enough hosts to distribute it to you all, in person during the following week.

Following guidelines set out by our bishop, Clergy and Eucharistic Visitors will bring communion to you at your homes upon request. We will pray the brief service of Communion Under Special Circumstances with you from your front porch. We will not enter your homes, we will maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance at all times, and we will wear masks. We will provide printed copies of the brief service; you need not plan on anything in particular.

If you would like to receive communion at home during the week of July 21-24, please fill out the form linked HERE. You MUST provide us with a current phone number so that we can contact you.

The form will ask for some basic information, including the number of people in your household who would like to receive, and when you might be available for us to stop by. We will confirm a window of time with you by Monday, with distribution beginning on Tuesday of that week.

Please know that if we have a lot of requests it will take us some time to get everyone scheduled and get communion distributed. Please be patient with us; we are a large congregation and we don't know how much interest there will be in this way of distributing communion.

We also need your help to get the word out to parishioners who may not receive emails from the Church or have limited use of technology. We will be contacting everyone via a recorded phone message, but please help us reach out and touch those folks, too, if you know anyone. If they would like communion you may fill out a form for them and submit it.

Backpack Buddies Team Up with the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Ministry

The food bags continue to flow to our young Backpack Buddies week after week, thanks to the ongoing help from our committed volunteers and generous benefactors. In addition to feeding the children, we are working with the St. Athanasius Food Pantry team, led by Marty Carnes, to feed needy families, as well.

This past week we were able to give out wonderful produce boxes ranging from 15 to 20 pounds. They contained fresh produce and fruit and were provided to us at NO COST by Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. The boxes contained different fruits and vegetables, based on where they were packed, but some of the contents included squash (yellow and zucchini), carrots, onions, potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, pears, apples, oranges. These fresh items were such a treat for the families and individuals that regularly come to St. Athanasius for help. We also provided them some canned pork to complement the produce.

We are so thankful to all our parishioners and friends who keep answering our weekly calls for specific items. The kids and their families appreciate these bags so much! And We Appreciate YOU making this program possible! (If you'd like to help with some particular items this week, we need the following.)

* PAPER GROCERY BAGS
  (With or without handles!)
* Oatmeal (individual packets)
* Raisin Snack Packs
* Fruit or Applesauce Cups
* Plastic Grocery Bags

We are always grateful for your donations! Any and all items may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House.
If you would like to help the Backpack Buddies ministry with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies) or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program) . For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
