Our 2020 Used Book Sale has been canceled due to Covid-19.
Help us continue to fulfill our mission to provide
local scholarships
to deserving women in Downers Grove, Darien, Lisle, Westmont, and Woodridge as well as to support the
National AAUW Fellowship and Grant programs
. Consider how much you have spent at our sale in the past as you think about making a donation.
If you would prefer to pay with a check, please mail your check payable to:

Please note that your donation to our local 501(c)(4) organization is not tax deductible.
We will periodically send out thank you emails to acknowledge donors and report on fundraising progress. We will also publish a list of donors on our webpage and in a Facebook post this fall.
If you would prefer not to be acknowledged by name, please use Anonymous as your first name on the online donation form or include a note in your check donation envelope.

USED BOOK COLLECTIONS AND SALE
|
|
Used Book Collections have been suspended until further notice.
We have instructed Eagle Storage not to accept any book donations for us as we are paying storage on donations that are left when we are not able to accept and process them. Please do NOT take book donations to Eagle Storage until our book collections resume at some time in the future as the phased re-opening allows. In the meantime, please review our
collection guidelines
.
The Used Book Sale for June 2020 has been cancelled.
We plan to host a Used Book Sale in June of 2021 and to resume Used Book Collections as soon as possible. We are continuing to store all the books donated during the 2019/2020 collections.
We encourage you to shop for used books this summer at

. Both of these outlets take material we cannot or do not sell each year. Their continued success will be important as we return to collecting and selling.

ANNUAL BRANCH MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
|
|
AAUW membership is based on a fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30. Annual dues for fiscal 2021 are due by June 30, 2020. It is the perfect time to join!
Here is the breakdown of dues for fiscal 2021:
• National $59.00
• State $10.00
• Local Branch $11.00
TOTAL $80.00 Same as Last Year!

GIVE A GRAD A GIFT until JUNE 30, 2020!

Act quickly if you want to take advantage of this program which will end on June 30, 2020. This is a unique gift for your children, grandchildren, and friends. There is no limit to the number of these memberships that a branch can give.
If you know a recent graduate with an Associate Degree or higher, you can give that graduate a gift of free AAUW national membership. Anyone who has graduated within the past 2 years is eligible. The person does not have to join the branch if she/he is not in the area. The gift of National membership can be given.
Attached is a special form to be filled in for this program. This form will only be accepted until June 30, 2020, so you must act quickly.

Greetings,
I hope this edition finds you all in good health, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic. I think our membership has been doing a wonderful job of getting though this time with our spirits and health mostly intact. Some of us do know friends or relatives who have been or are afflicted with the coronavirus, and we wish them/us and their loved ones well.
We initiated a branch calling tree and it has been a wonderful tool for reaching out to and connecting with members in the absence of in-person interaction, and for checking on their well-being. We will continue to use it.
Meantime, I believe we have all tried our best to “carry-on” and do whatever has needed to be done – by holding meetings, sending out minutes, keeping members informed via e-mails, writing and submitting reports, etc. We will remember: our year-long 70th anniversary celebrations to which many members contributed, especially Kim Venzon; the loss of member Helen Myers, who’d been named “DG Historian of the Year” for 2019 shortly before her death, (an honor previously received by two other AAUW members – Montrew Dunahm and myself), and so much more!
I, like the rest of you, look forward to once again spending time in-person with other members at meetings, programs, interest group discussions, and events like future 4th of July parades and Used Book Sales and Equal Pay Day marches. Those days WILL come again!

There have been several Zoom webinars from AAUW National on many different subjects, from Get Out the Vote, Skype a Scientist, AAUW Town Hall, to Effective Social Media. If you missed any of them and wish to catch up, they have all been recorded and are available

I would like to share a few nuggets from the recent AAUW Town Hall webinar:
1) All of the fifty AAUW National employees will be working from home until at least Labor Day, as many of them are caring for children and/or older relatives and are trying to keep everyone healthy. However, much help is available using the new website which is up and running but still a work in process. Many new pages are being added all the time.
2) In addition to the Start Smart and Work Smart programs, they are working on an
Equity Network to attract the support of younger working women, the revamping of the current College & University program to include alumnae, more professional development programs and the need for Spanish translations but these programs need funding.
3) Kim Churches stated that she expects we will experience a difficulty in convening with 50 or more people until at least the spring of 2021, which will limit many AAUW programs and conventions.
During the coming year, your officers and board will continue to serve our membership in any way possible while we are staying in, meeting on Zoom, and looking for other ways to keep our members engaged and informed.

Education Secretary Assaults Victims’ Rights
Title IX bars sex discrimination at schools and universities that receive federal funding. Title IX also defines sexual harassment, assault, and how schools must respond to allegations of misconduct. The Department of Education issued new rules May 6 that place a further burden on victims.
