I believe that the most important thing we can do is to pray. We need to pray for our elected officials. We need to pray for candidates who will uphold the safety and dignity of every human being. We need
to pray for an honest and violence free election. We also need to pray for our officials who run the election sites that they are protected from harm.
I am inviting you to commit to pray each day for leaders who reflect the teachings of Jesus.
Let us pray: “Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States and this community in the election of officials and representatives; that, by
faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BCP p822.

CEC Fall Festival * Trunk-or-Treat * Ministry Fair
On Sunday, October 23rd, from noon until 2 pm, CEC will host Fall Festival & Ministry Fair. CEC ministries are invited to set up a booth for the Ministry Fair. The booths will allow the congregation to learn more about the various service groups at CEC and enable the ministries to be part of the Fall Festival by setting up a small game, having a small giveaway, or providing food/drink. If your ministry would be able to set up a booth as part of this event, please contact Sherrie Hill.
We will also have a Trunk-or-Treat area to allow local area children to trick-or-treat from the decorated trunks/truck beds of our congregation’s vehicles. Trunk-or-Treat is an excellent opportunity to interact with the community and spend some time in fellowship with other church members. If you are interested in learning more about Trunk-or-Treat, please contact Sherrie Hill.

And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

WEEKLY REFLECTION
September 25, 2022
Lazarus and the Rich Man
Luke 16:19-31, Jesus’ parable is about two completely different people; a rich person whose delight is in self- indulgence and Lazarus, a poor beggar with nothing but faith. The rich man is clothed in both “purple” and “fine linen” which indicates wealth, but also extravagant, conspicuous consumption. He doesn’t have a name, it’s unknown who he is. Lazarus has nothing but sores and his name. In having a name, we understand he has an important role in the parable, his name gives him a human identity.
Since Lazarus was carried by angels to be with Abraham in heaven after death, we are assured that his was a godly life. The rich man goes to Hades, Hell, alone and tormented.
Have you ever been on the outside looking in; maybe looking for shelter, a tank of gas or simply a warm word?
In life, the rich man doesn’t help, torment or even acknowledge Lazarus. The culture of the time would not allow Lazarus to speak with, or touch the rich man, he could only hope the rich man would acknowledge him. The rich man does nothing.
Our gifts of time, talent and treasure we receive gratefully from God who expects us to cherish and tend them in a responsible manner. We are called to give back in gratitude to God, with acts of charity and love, a portion of what he has given us.
The rich man didn’t descend to Hell because he wore a purple robe or fine linen or because he lived in abundance and was well fed. He used his wealth only for himself. For Lazarus, who was in need, he did nothing and that was his sin.
Lazarus was right there, at his gate but he felt no compassion, took no action.

The Tuesday Book Club is reading The Jesus Priorities: 8 Essential Habits by Christopher Maricle. The author helps answer the question “What would Jesus Do?” by mapping out the main priorities Jesus modeled in his life and ministry. A formal analysis of the Gospels yields 8 priorities to emulate: healing, love, prayer, confidence in heaven’s treasures, oneness with God, spreading the word, innocence, and humility. The book is available on Amazon. Please join us on Tuesdays from 10:30-12:00 in the library for lively discussions, diverse insights and much laughter. All are welcome! Questions, please contact Mary Wybenga at EJayW@msn.com or at 303-850-7347.
