Debra Green -
The Convention of Wives
|
Dina and Julia first meet at a surgical convention and bond over frustrations with their husbands’ demanding schedules. But geography, time, and growing families make maintaining their friendship difficult and their relationship eventually falls apart.
A sweeping saga that follows generations from a shtetl in Odessa to the comforts of Scarsdale, an uprising in Glasgow to servitude in the Caribbean, and a trek through the Alps to a displaced persons camp in Italy, The Convention of Wives is a story about the ever-evolving messiness of friendship and marriage, and the wonder of survival.
The Convention of Wives is Debra Green’s first novel.

Miami Jewish Film Festival Inaugural Marquee Film Series at the MBJCC Greener Pastures
|
Join us for a “cinema under the stars” event with Greener Pastures, an award-winning Israeli film nominated for 12 Israeli Academy Awards, including Best Film. A cranky Israeli retiree gets a new lease on life as a cannabis dealer, in this sparkly comedy caper. Newly retired and recently widowed, Dov (Shlomo Bar Aba) feels imprisoned in his luxurious gated community. Low on money and friends, he hatches a plot to buy back his old rustic cottage by selling marijuana to fellow seniors. As his business takes off, along with romance, it’s not long before his distribution ring runs hilariously afoul of the police and local mafia.
Feel free to bring a lawn chair and snacks.

Opening Exhibition Reception:
The Schwartz-Jacobs Family Gallery Presents
Memory Lane, a Photographic Retrospective by Larry Shane
|
This exhibition of photographic images showcases historic, iconic, endangered, or vanishing places in Miami Beach and South Florida to provide pleasant memories and a nostalgic look at times past. They ask us to reflect on what was and to think about how we shape our future.
Larry Shane, a lifelong resident of Miami, is a Miami-Dade-based, award-winning photographer, whose artistic style began with the documentation of the closure of the Miami Orange Bowl in 2008. While his passion is to photograph almost everything, he began to concentrate his eye on places that held fond memories for South Floridians like himself. Larry has been exhibiting his work in local street art fairs in Miami since 2015.

In the wake of the devasting toll Hurricane Ian had on the state of Florida, the Miami Beach JCC would like to send our love and support to all those affected. In order to help the hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced or stranded, we join The Greater Miami Jewish Federation as well as Jewish communities across the county to help provide critical shelter and aid.
The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has established an Emergency Relief Fund to assist those affected by Hurricane Ian. In the face of the devastation, immediate help is needed. One hundred percent of the funds collected will provide aid and critical support to those in need. If you would like to be part of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's response to Hurricane Ian, please give here: https://jewishmiami.org/hurricaneian/
